Frequently Asked Questions

The questions below have been taken from the various message boards provided by RootsWeb

Question:   I am trying to find out what part of Ireland my grandfather came from.  His name was Julian Evelyne Dyas and was born around 1880, I can not find any trace or him his mother and father.
Answer:  Since you don't know the county or town where your grandfather was born, and his birth occurred after the beginning of Civil Registration, check with your local LDS Family History Center for the films of the Irish Births Registration Index to get the book and page number of your grandfather.  It should list the town where he was born.  The index is Alpha, so you don't have to spend hours pouring over the records. The birth record will give you your grandfathers parents, and the town where he was born.

LDS has not microfilmed all the birth records, but they have microfilmed all the indexes.  If LDS does not has the microfilmed the record you need, you can contact the General Register Office (Oifig An Ard-Chláraitheora in Irish) web site http://www.groireland.ie/about_us.htm    For one pound, 50 you can order a photocopy of the birth registration.
