MULLINS / HEALY - Looking for info about MULLINS family who owned the butchers in Galway around 1850/60's and earlier or later. Another unnamed sister became a nun (we think.) Anyone with recollection of this family or any living relatives, I would love to make contact with them. Matthew and Mary Healy were my grt grt grandparents. Thank you .... J.M.

FRANCIS / HARKINS - thomas francis from gateshead durham u.k marriag m.a.harkins 1872.+ est 1856 born galway ireland

Margaret Brown <[email protected]> WROTE:                                                                                 MULLARKEY and CARR - Hullo - the families I am researching in Galway are the MULLARKEY and CARR families.
Terence Mullarkey and his wife Honoria Carr lived in Clifden and had at least the following children - Hubert, Frederick, Charles?, Francis?, Jane, Paul, Mary Kate, Henrietta, Fannie and Annie.  Terence died 5 January 1888 and is buried at Ardbear. Honoria died 16 October 1892.   They had several businesses in Clifden and Glendalough, including a hotel in Clifden. Of their children, I know that Hubert, Paul, Mary Kate, Henrietta, Fannie and Annie migrated to America in 1897.  Frederick came to Australia in 1883 and was my great grandfather.  I believe that Honoria was related to the Carr family of Mount Bellow, Moylough and there may be a connection with Lakeview House and the Carr family who lived there?
This is about all I know of my ancestors from Galway and would appreciate any further help.

Shirley Brinly, < [email protected] > has sent the following query:
Shaughnessy / Cavanaugh - I am trying to locate the birthplace of my great grandparents, Mary Shaughnessy and Francis Cavanaugh.  Their marriage certificate states that they were both born in Galway, Ireland.  They were married on August 28, 1871 in Jeffersonville, Indiana,USA.  Mary was the daughter of Patrick Shaughnessy and Honorah Burke; Francis (Frank) was the son of John Cavanaugh and Margaret Conway. Frank was the only one of his sibling to be born in Ireland (c. 1847); his two brothers, Thomas and John and sister, Hannah, were born in England.  The family came to American sometime after 1860 and before 1870.  Mary was born about 1850 and probably immigrated to America before June, 1870.  She is found in the 1870 U.S. Census for Jefferson County (Louisville) Kentucky USA listed as 20 years old.  She died as the result of a house fire on June 1, 1893 in Jeffersonville, Indiana.  Her obituary lists relatives attending the funeral as:  Thomas M. and Patrick Shaughnessy, Mrs. Annie Radlgan, Mrs. D!
 elia Fury, and Miss Nellie Shaughnessy, all brothers and sisters of the deceased.  There is no evidence that Mary's parents, Patrick and Honorah, ever immigrated to the US.  I have other information regarding the marriages, deaths, and survivors of her siblings if the would be helpful.

Scanlan / Scanlon / Scandlon - I'm fairly new to Genealogy. It's certainly not as easy as it looks. I'm stuck in St. Nicholas Galway. My GGGG Grandad John Scanlan/Scanlon/Scandlon was born there in 1755. He served in the Army for a number of years but did not enrol until he was 36. His profession was given as 'baker'. I have his military record. I beleive his son, my gggg grandad, John, was probably also born in Galway. I'd really like to find his christening, or at least John junior's. John Scanlan senior died in Jersey, Channel Islands in 1811. I wonder if you would be so kind to suggest anywhere I could look, or methods I could adopt to pin the family down?

Kathleen McKeady, < [email protected] > has sent the following query:
MCKEADY - I have been searching and searching for the McKeady's in Ireland. Obviously they existed but I am just having so many problems finding them. I found a few females in Northern Ireland, marrying into other families.
at the Presbyterian Church in Donegal.but no birth records or baptism records or Death for that matter.
I found 1 baptism record in Sligo with parents names in 1869 but no further. I think they were also Mormon's.
I also know some McKeady's were on Passenger ships but still no birth records, But born in Ireland. There were McKeady's in Galway but no actual records to find on the NET anyway. There was 3 McKeady's in Dublin on the 1911 Census but that does not tell you where born or married.
My Nan was born Kathleen McKeady 03/11/1926, Married Thomas Dunne of Dublin we think. Her Mum was Mary McKeady but doubt was born in Dublin. We do not know of Siblings for Kathleen, Mary or Thomas. I have been through so many genealogy sites and costing me so much money.
Apart from 1911 Census we cannot find Catherine then 47, Michael 25 or Anne 20.
No marriage records or birth records. I understand why no Death for maybe Catherine
because of the fire.
Although even after 1940's it is hard for Dublin. National Archives were no use, they gave me email addresses for elsewhere to search. Which again did not help.
You see my Mum was brought up in a convent in Longford, But no one has wrote back to me from there.
My Mum was born Teresa Christina McKeady in the Rotunda Hospital. In 1957 was adopted Dunne when we think my Nan finally married Thomas. I just do not understand why I cannot find McKeady's. I so want to do this for my Mum,
I think she needs some real clarification of who she is and where she comes from or originates from. She left Ireland when she was 16, since then been in England. If I can help you with more info I will but only about my Aunts and Uncles in Dublin and there children, that's of course if you can help me. Thank you for reading my letter.
Kathleen McKeady (Miss) Isle of Wight, England.

WELSH / GAFFEY - Have recently begun to research my Irish lines, my maternal grandfather Rodger J. Welsh, who was born in PA. and was the grandson of the Irish immigrants, Rodger WELSH (b. ca 1831) and Mary GAFFEY.  These families both engaged in coal mining.  They immigrated  to the US in 1869-1870 from England where I found them in the 1861 census in Staffordshire and found a marriage record for them in the parish Rugeley, Staff. in 1853; and I found they settled in NE Pennsylvania in 1880 census (Barclay, Bradford Co.); but by 1888 they are in Punxsutawney, Jefferson Co.  The gravestone when I visited Punxsy said Mary  GAFFEY Welsh was from County Galway, and parish Ballinakill.  I haven't found it on a map yet; but there seems to be several named Ballinakill when I look it up in the Gazetteer of Ireland.  Can you help steer me where to look for this parish, and what else I should look for?  Also, when in Punxsutawney, I met a cousin who said there was talk that Rodger WELSH was from Rosc!

Barbara O'Connor, < [email protected] > has sent the following query:
HANNAN - Alice Hannan, aged 17, and her sister, Mary Hannan, aged 16, arrived in Australia on the Panama, January 1850, on one of Earl Grey's 'consignments' from a Galway workhouse. Documents show the girls' parents as Bryan/Brian & Mary Hannan, mother living in Eckford/Edford, father presumably deceased. Alice is shown as a Native of Edford/Eckford and her place of birth as Clann,Galway and Mary's birthplace is shown as Ballyna.
I can't find a townland of Ballyna in Galway (although a heap of them beginning with Bally...) and also can't identify Edford/Eckford, or Clann, in Ireland. I'm assuming that errors were made in transcribing the information for the registers held in Australia. Can anyone offer any advice as to where to start looking for the correct information.
Given the requirements put on the workhouses to provide these young women for passage to Australia, I imagine there are records available in Ireland.

LiRae Mullen Sullins, < [email protected] > has sent the following query:
MULLEN/TEERIN-FEERIN-FERRIN-FEARON - Years ago, using old Irish naming traditions that ran through my family, I gave my ancestors the first names of Lawrence and Ellen.  Lo and behold, yesterday, a nice woman in Chicago helped me by researching some death records for one of my grgrgrgrandparent's sons and there they were, the names of:
LAWRENCE MULLEN
b. Ireland
ELLEN TEERIN/FEERIN
b. Co. Galway, Ireland
and
LAWRENCE MULLEN
b. Ireland
ELLEN FERRIN
b. Co. Galway, Ireland

I about fell over when I realized that I had not only given them the correct first names, but suddenly, here was my grgrgrMULLENgrandmother's maiden name that had escaped me for 22 years, this April.  Now comes the hunt.

From what I am reading and understanding...the spelling of "Teerin" is more than likely just a typo on the document, since the son died in 1915 and is spelled "Feerin" on it.  BUT, in all likelyhood, her maiden name is either Ferrin OR Fearon, which makes more sense to me.  AND from what I am reading, she probably did come from Co. Galway, maybe the Connacht area???  I have never known where in Co. Galway my Mullen ancstors were from, ONLY that "they came from Co. Galway", as is inscribed on my grgrgrandfather's headstone.  Below you will put some bits on my Mullen ancestors and perhaps someone else is also searching for them to fill in their own blanks?  Thanks ever so much.  LiRae (Mullen) Sullins

My grgrgrandfather, Patrick Mullen, three of his brothers (William, Dennis & Lawrence) & one sister (Hannah (Mullen) Hart) was SAID to have 'CAME from County Galway', late 1840's to mid-1860's (Lawrence believed to have been the last in 1862). Nowhere is it ever mentioned that these Mullens were BORN in Co. Galway, Ireland, but I have been told that "if they said they CAME from Co. Galway, then that is where they probably DID come from". I have NO IDEA where they were born in Ireland, but they were most definitely from Ireland. It was told that one brother, Thomas, stayed in Ireland and was reportedly mad at the others because they would leave Ireland for America, plus stories handed down say 'the married siblings got their first homes on the estate where the family lived and worked, to work on same land'.
Does anyone know any of this family? Are you missing these people from your family tree? I know of and have heard the names of the following:
*Patrick MULLEN [my line] b. abt. 1824 IRE d. 9 Jan. 1892 Leasburg, Crawford Co., Missouri--married twice Bridget Cummings...4 children--Nancy "Catherine" Davis...11 children;
*Denis/Dennis MULLEN b. abt. 1830 IRE d. 17 March 1900 Leasburg, Crawford Co., Missouri--married Bridget Radigan/Ratigan...11 children;
*William "Wild Bill" MULLEN b. unk d. 14 June 1849 in Keytesville, Missouri (killed over a card game, near St. Louis)--never married?...no children?;
*Lawrence MULLEN b. Jan. 1840/1843 IRE d. 7 May 1915 Cuba, Crawford Co., Missouri--married Lucinda Rhea...12 children;
*Hannah (MULLEN) Hart b. abt. 1837 IRE d. unk St. Louis or Crawford Co., Missouri--married Michael Hart...3 children;
*Bridget MULLEN reportedly came to Crawford Co., Missouri and did not like it; headed to New York and was never heard of again--no proof;
*John MULLEN reportedly came to America and his family, in Missouri, did not hear from him for fifty years--he had moved to Kansas and reared a family there--no proof;
*Catherine MULLEN is one, some cousins say, that THEY were told was also a sibling, and was only in Missouri for a very short time, also--no proof.
And, married siblings on top of all of these? Huge family!!! They were Roman Catholic. The estate they reportedly lived /worked on was Briefield? Briarfield?
I'm guessing at their father's name--Patrick MULLENs oldest son was 'Lawrence Louis MULLEN'....his middle name was for his mother's father; so, am guessing that his first name was for Patrick's father, thus have named him Lawrence(?) MULLEN [now proven to be truly his name].
Any help, at all, on this family, would be most deeply appreciated. I have years of info from the known siblings to present. But as to where they were exactly born in Ireland, their parents [*just found the parent's names-Feb 4, '08*] and other siblings, I have no clue. If you can help me, I do most sincerely thank you ahead of time for all you've done.

HAVERTY / LYONS - Mary Haverty from Knockroe, Athenry, Co. Galway married Tim Halvey c.1893. They lived in Ferbane, Co. Offaly; had 3 children - May (b.c. 1894, John (1895) and Nora (about 1897). May and Nora emigrated to join their aunt Kate Haverty on Long Island. May became May Cushing and Nora became Nora White. Their father, Tim Halvey died c.1900 and their mother married again and lived with her husband Jim Lyons, in Oranmore, Galway. Jim died 1937 and his wife Mary in 1955. I wish to find out something about the Cushing and White families of Long Island.

CASEY / HENNESSEY - John Casey (1822) emmigrated with his mother Bridget (?White b. 1795) sister Margaret (1831)brother Mathew (1838) and possibly brother Martin (abt.1818) with family wife Bridget Hennessey (1821) and children:  Mary (1836), John (1839), Thomas (1846), and Bridget (1847), all before 1849.  They came to Biddulph Ontario Canada probably through New York. The only indication I have of where they lived in Galway is from my mother in law who said that her grandparents lived across the river Shannon from each other.  Susan Ryan, who married John Casey in Canada was from Co. Tipperary.  So they lived near the river Shannon where Galway and Tipperary met.  I have not been able to find where in Co. Galway they lived. Any ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks, Joan  [email protected]

Fitzpatrick - Dia dhuit. I am looking for ancestors.  I have traced back to Catherine Fitzpatrick (I believe that is her married name).  She would have been born around 1818.  I think 2 of her children, Winifred and William came to US aboard Isaac Webb, and left out of Liverpool, arriving in NY May 25, 1850.  I believe another child Margaret Fitzpatrick came to the US a few years later.  Catherine Fitzpatrick was in US according to 1860 census.  From an obituary of Margaret Fitzpatrick Collins, it states they were originally from Galway Ireland.  I would like to know Catherine's maiden name and any information on the Fitzpatrick that she married. SHAUGHNESSY /  CAVANAUGH / BURKE / FUREY I am trying to locate the area in Galway,that my ggrandmother, Mary SHAUGHNESSY came from.  She was married to Francis CAVANAUGH in Jeffersonville, Indiana, USA on August 28, 1871.  She appears in the 1870 census living across the river, in the Louisville Hotel working as a laundress.  She is the daughter of Patrick SHAUGHNESSY and Honora (Hannah?) BURKE.  There is no evidence that her parents ever came to the USA.  The only hope I have of "reaching across the pond" is that her sister, Delia, married a James FUREY
prior to immigrating to the US.  If I can locate a marriage record for them, perhaps it will give a location of their church parish and home town as well as confirmation of the parents names.
Delia and James FUREY immigrated from Ireland to either Jeffersonville, Indiana or Louisville, Kentucky in 1887.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Shirley , < [email protected] > has sent the following query:

Connelly / Farrell - "Michael Connelly married Mary Farrell in Williamstown, Co Galway, Ireland. He was a baliff for Counselor McDermott.  Williamstown is on a main highway between Twam and Roscommon in high country where the rivers on one side flow east and south to the river Shannon and on the other flow west into Galway Bay.  Ballymoe, south of Castle Rock is on the same highway but over the line in County Roscommon." "Catherine Bleigh married Thomas Connolly.  They had a small land holding on the estate of Sir Thomas Burke, a Catholic, at Marble Head in County Galway near the Roscommon border, Ballymoe and Williamstown." {from "The Connelly-Gough Heritage" a family booklet} Frances(Michael) Connelly immigrated in 1870.  Sarah Connolly immigrated in 1868. They are children of above mentioned couples.  They Met in Chicago in 1872, they discovered that their widowed mothers were friends at home in Ireland. Frances and Sarah married in 1873 in Chicago.

dau Catherine Connolly married before 1868 and probably did not immigrate
The fact that two widows knew each other in 1870 seems to put about a twenty mile radius on these two families.  The stories of Counselor McDermott and Sir Thomas Burke should help me pinpoint the location.  It  doesn't help that I loaned my Galway roadmaps to my sisters for their last trip to Ireland and they threw them out the car window, a family tradition.  Pour me a pint I'm on my way.   Thomas [email protected]
