Ellis Island Foundation - Passenger Search Search the database for immigrant passengers who sailed to Ellis Island and the Port of New York From 1892 to 1954, over twelve million immigrants entered the United States through the portal of Ellis Island, a small island in New York Harbor. Ellis Island is located in the upper bay just off the New Jersey coast, within the shadow of the Statue of Liberty. Through the years, this gateway to the new world was enlarged from its original 3.3 acres to 27.5 acres mostly by landfill obtained from ship ballast and possibly excess earth from the construction of the New York City subway system.

Galway Emigrant Index 1828 - 1860, compiled by Peter Madden The index covers only those emigrants who came directly to New South Wales (Australia) and Moreton Bay (Queensland) from Galway, Ireland, under the “assisted immigration” schemes of the day, to the end of 1855. Only those people who gave Galway as their “native place” are detailed in full, plus a few others that I deemed necessary for clarity or to give the "full picture".

The Galway Advertiser - Two hundred years ago, Salthill was made up of agricultural land which had little or no strategic or military importance. It consisted of a small cluster of fishermen’s cottages which extended from roughly where Seapoint is today to the ‘Bal’. There was another smaller group of cottages at Blackrock, and also one in Rockbarton near where the stadium is today. Much of the land was owned by a couple of landlords.

1824 Survey of Irish Schools on Microfiche - Under the terms of the Gavelkind Act, the (Protestant) Irish Parliament in 1704 enacted Penal Laws intended to make sure that the Catholic majority would never again endanger the Protestant Ascendancy. Among other things, these laws provided that "No Catholic may attend a university, keep a school, or send his children to be educated abroad. 10 pounds reward is offered for the discovery of a Roman Catholic teacher."

Researching Irish Names On surname lists, it really pays to take the time to go down the whole thing carefully! Often names have been spelled many ways, and one needs to play with them phonetically in order not to miss one's goal due to "odd" spellings! Also, don't forget to look through the Mc's, Mac's, O's... and also, if you have a prefix, check for those who've dropped it!
