Kilsherdany is a difficult parish to administer. The southern end of the parish has more contact with Carrickallen church area than Kill. (St. Bridget's is at Kill) The people of the north-western end tend to go to Bunnoe, or Corrinshigo (in the Clogher diocese), while townlands such as Corbeagh, Lislea and Errigal would appear to be really part of Drumgoon. This is not a feature peculiar to Kill. In general, most parochial boundaries have been established for many centuries and have not been altered to fit in with the growth of new centres of population. http://cavan.local.ie/content/9708.shtml/kill

I am interested in researching my ancestors in Kildrumsherdan (Kill) Parish. Family names include:McFADDEN, SIMONS, DRURY, HICKS, ROWAN(TREE). Especially interested in McFADDEN/SIMONS connection. Also interested in families that attended Kilmount Presbyterian and Kilsherdany Ch of Ireland in 1800's. I have traced McFADDEN's from Kildrumsherdan all over the world; but, always looking for more! Dec. 26, 1816 Birth year of " McGoveren, Patrick Native of the parish of Kill, Cavan County Ire. 26 Dec 1816 - 28 Aug 1885" St Josephs Bloomfield Cemetery: Many of the people of Bloomfield, Illinois were from the Cavan area. Almost all of the people it seems followed a priest from Cavan a father McGirr. Many more but there stones are not marked. Oct.11,1823 John Beggan is recorded in the Tithes Applotment books renting 5-01-4 acres of land in the townlands of Kilairuney (Killaire [oru] ney) , parish of Kildrumsherdan, Co Cavan. Janet Ruddy

The other townland where you located the name John Beggan in the townland of Kilairuney - this is the townland of KILLACREENY -it is situated on the northeast of the Parish of Kilsherdany. I did locate the entry in the Tithe Applotment Books for John Began (spelt thus). Catherine McNally, Cavan Genealogy Center

1825 "Looking for the McCullen family members in Kilsherdany Parish or surrounding area. My direct ancestors are J. McCullen and wife Mary. Their Children are: Andrew, born abt. 1825 Owen, born abt. 1827 James, born abt. 1830 Hugh, born abt. 1834 Bernard, born abt. 1840 Owen McCullen immigrated to Cincinnati, Ohio, USA around 1845. Remaining brothers, sister and mother joined Owen around 1850. Father died in Ireland sometime late 1840s. I have seen the McCullen surname listed in other records in this Parish but I have not found specific references to individual family members.

 Aug. 10, 1829 "MS33834.3 Clements Papers / In Collection report 49 this document is stated to be from the Ashfield Estate, Co. Cavan, which is near Killincreenay. However the manuscript documents has no such identifying tags in them.

Colonel Clements to John Boyd

Included in an account above dated Aug 10, 1829 totalling £910.14.5 is the following line –

Hu Biggan out of McGlone’s old acct. re Boyd - £5. 0. 0. *

* My expanation for this line is that Biggin may have taken over as tenant from McGlone and inherited a debt of £5 to be settled by Boyd, whom may have been Clement’s agent /overseer.

One item in above total was a payment to John Boyd of £323.3.7½

This payment was broken down on a separate sheet entitled – Labourers’ Acct. by John Boyd.

There are some thirty/forty names on the list of labourers, including the following line –

There is nothing on the document to indicate to which of Clement’s various estates in Ireland these emigrants hailed from. It would be possible to make suggestions; archivist Clesham suggests Co. Cavan with a question mark in her Report 49. An examination of the tithes for Killersherdiny parish would enable you to compare surnames with names in the list and would be a useful guide if unusual names like Huich are found in Killersherdiny Tithes.

Late, 1835 "One of the greatest miseries of human life, the deprivation of fuel, oppresses the peasantry of Kill. Tubary is quite exhausted over a very large extant of the parish . The tenantry located in its central and Northern sections are obliged to carry their turf 5 and 6 miles without any hope of ever ameliorating their unfortunate condition. ..The faintest trace of natural woods nowhere exists within the parish. .... the surface of the parish presents a very naked and cheerless landscape. ......The general appearence of the scenery of the parish, like many others of the surrounding district, is bleak and dreary. Very few trees appear upon its surface. The cabins of the tenantry are wretched in the extreme....The tenantry of the parish attend the petty sessions of Coothill every wednesday for the redress of grievances. Colonel Clements of Ashfield and Maxwell Boyle Esquire of Tullyvin, both resident within the parish, supported by the magistrates of Drumgoon, comprise the bench. The character of the parish is quiet and orderly. Illicit distillation is carried on when the price of corn is much reduced but not otherwise. ....In several localities where slate rock abound, the cottages are built of stone, with glass windows, devided into 2 and 3 apartments: but when the grauwacke rock prevail, which are exceedingly irregular in cleavage, the cabins are formed of mud and seldom exceed the ground floor. .....Potatoes and buttermilk constitute the chief and almost only diet of the people. Very coarse friezes and corduroys with home-spun woolens and fancy cottons form their attire. One striking peculiarity in the dress of the males is their never wearing a neck cloth: and the females, in the hottest days of summer, wear their cloaks and feel undressed without them. ....A few families dispose of the interest in their leses and emigrate annually to the Canadas, and vast numbers would follow their example if furnished with the means of paying their passage. None return, nor does any depart from hence during the harvest season. ....the great landed proprietors of the parish are Colonel Clements of Ashfield, Major Burrows of Stradone, Maxwell Boyle Esquire of Tullyvin, Charles Coote Esquire of Bellamont Forest, Charles Adams Esquire of retreat and the bishop of the diocese. ......The same destructive influnce which cramps the energies and paralyses the physical powers of the occupying tenantry, the subletting and subdivisions of the soil into small holdings, is equally operative in all its ruinous consequences on the prosperity of the parish of Kill as it is in every other paarish of the surrounding district: " Ordnance Survey

"There are two Roman catholic chapels within the parish, 1 in the townland of Drumhart erected by the Revd Felix McCabe, the Roman Catholic clergyman, in the year 1826, in close proximity with the parochial church, accommadates 750 members. ....Drumhart schools: 111 protestants, 1 Catholic, 64 males, 48 females, total 112: supported by scholars and the National Board of Education, established in 1830. Also 50 Protestants, 67 Catholics, 70 males, 47 females, total 117: supported by rector 5 pounds and the London Hibernian Society 8 pounds, established in 1826." Ordance Survey in late 1835

Oct. 25, 1862 "CAVAN ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH--The dedication of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in this town took place on Sunday last, on which occasion a sermon was preached by the Right Rev. Dr. LEAHY, Bishop of Dromer...After the sermon, the Right Rev. Dr. BROWNE, Roman Catholic Bishop of Kilmore, announced that the proceeds from the sale of tickets and private donations amount to £700, a sum which seemed to realize the expectations of those who were instrumental in organizing the proceedings.....  Oct. 11, 1873 "James Lockington and Mary Ann Wright married immediately before their departure to N.Z. and the voyage out was their honeymoon. They married on 11th October 1873 in the Church of Ireland, Dernakesh Chapel. Parish of Drumgoon, County Cavan, Ireland. James gave his age as 25, that he was a bachelor and farmer and the son of Charles Lockington, Farmer. His residence was Drumerkillew, Parish of Killsherdeny. Mary Ann gave her age as 24, that she was a spinster, and the daughter of William Wright, Farmer. Her residence was Drumnagress in the Parish of Killsherdeny. These names would be of townlands, a group of which makes a parish. They were signed out by licenses, by Jno Moore. Witnesses were Henry Wright and Thomas Lockington. (Thomas was the younger brother of James. He was said to be born 18th March 1854 in Cootehill). There is a photo copy of the civil marriage record (No: 100 of 1873) in my records. It, in turn, is a copy of the register, which was hand written and hard to read. Place names were mis-spelt. mailto:[email protected]
