Beasley Family Bible, Wells Co., Indiana
BEASLEY BIBLE - Wells Co., Indiana

Contributed by Sam McGibbon,

I have the Family Bible of Thomas Beasley, born 10 Jan 1793, So. Carolina and died 7 March 1875, Jackson township, Wells county, Indiana.

The Beasley Family lived in Jackson township, Wells county, about two miles south of Warren, for many years. Thomas and his second wife, Rachel, are buried at the back of the Mitchell cemetery just south of Warren, IN. Thomas Beasley is my GGG grandfather. His eldest son, William Beasley and his wife, Amy, are also buried in the Mitchell cemetery. William Beasley's second son, John Perry and his wife, Sarah (Pouless) Beasley are my G grandparents. They are buried at Woodlawn cemetery, Warren, IN.

The Bible was printed in New York in 1828 by the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Until recently I didn't know how some of the names in the Family Bible fit into the family tree. I located a Beezley family burial plot in the Hill Grove Cemetery, Hill Grove, Darke County, Ohio.

Silas, born 15 Oct 1766 and Mary Beasley, born 11 May 1755 and died 10 Aug 1845 are parents of Thomas Beasley. The family moved to Darke County, Ohio in the early 1800s from South Carolina and moved to Jackson twp., Wells County in 1866.

Scan # 2 is Elizabeth (Betsy) Beasley, Thomas' first wife and mother of his children. The Bible records her birth as 18 1 the "0" is missing. The attached picture of her tombstone at Hill Grove Cemetery verifies her birth year as 1801.

Thomas Beasley was a true pioneer and Indian fighter. Family lore handed down from generation to generation relates that one of his sons was pushed into a large pot of boiling water and was scalded to death by two Indians.
Jessie Gray and Thomas Beasley were somewhat noted as "Indian Hunters", that is, hunting Indians as others hunted wolves.  Quote is from 1875 ATLAS of DARKE COUNTY OHIO by Lake, Griffing and Stevenson, page 17.

Thomas Beasley served in the War of 1812 under Capt. Richard Lewis.
He was honorably discharged at Whitehead's Blockhouse near Richmond the 18th of July 1813.
