Clay was established on February 12, 1825, it's county seat is Brazil. It was named for U.S. Speaker of the House Henry Clay.

Clay County has 11 Townships: Brazil, Cass, Dick Johnson, Harrison, Jackson, Lewis, Perry, Posey, Sugar Ridge, Van Buren and Washington.
