Marriages have been recorded in Indiana from the territorial period until the present day by the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the county where the marriage was performed. Births and deaths, however, have been recorded by the civil authorities in Indiana only since 1882. Records of births and deaths are maintained by the County Health Officer of the county where the birth or death occurred.
