We have come of age. This will be the 21st year for THE PACKET and for TSGS, We are watching and participating in many of the changes that are happenning in the world of genealogy. Check our purchased material lists and our web page. Since this is the first issue of the year, both inside covers have been updated. The list of officers and board members is opposite page 1.
If you do German research realize that there are such things as Lebenslauf (life stories or autobiographies) that do turn up and can answer all sorts of questions. Many thanks to Robert Schlundt, who has translated and made available the Lebenslauf of his ancestor, Pastor Johann Fr. Schlundt, who brought his family to Posey county in 1852.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

It's hard to believe that our society is beginning the 21st year of existence. We have grown over the years, in spite of the fact that some said we wouldn't last - and that our first issues of The Packet were too ambitious to be sustained. Perhaps that kind of challenge is one of the things that has kept us going. I feel fortunate to have been a charter member of Tri-State Genealogical Society, and hope I have been a part of seeing it through some challenging times. One of the most remarkable things about the group is that so many of us are such good friends. I have received lots of help in working through family research problems, from people I wouldn't have known otherwise; and encouragement in pushing myself to learn more.
Much of our membership does not live close enough to attend our monthly meetings, and to know the active members who live close to Evansville. Some of you periodically come to Willard Library to do on-the-spot family research, and are aware of the wonderful resources available there. I'm proud of the part our society has been able to play in making their collection one of the best in the Midwest.
We have a wonderful relationship with Willard Library, one which many societies envy greatly. I have seen groups who must rent storefront space in which to meet and/or to house their small collection of library materials. Most of their energy and resources go to maintaining space and providing volunteers to keep it open part of the time. It's no wonder many young groups stay small and disband after a few years.
I urge all of you to become involved in a group near where you live. It would be nice if you could do your own research there, but that is not as important as helping a group stay healthy and alive. Your interaction with other researchers will help you even though you (like me) may happen not to live near your roots. None of my ancestors ever lived in or near the Tri-State, but my association with this society has made a big difference in what I know today about genealogical research.
