'EXIT' TOTALS PUT AT 30,300
Figures Compiled In Evacuation Test.
A total of 30,300
persons took part in Operation Exit last Wednesday, St. Joseph
County Civil Defense leaders claimed Friday.
City Traffic Engineer Ernest H. Miller,
who headed the evacuation planning committee, said the figure was
compiled from information supplied by traffic evaluation teams.
He said the teams were posted throughout
the evacuation area, at turn around points and on return routes
during the test.
A breakdown of the total, Miller said,
showed that 8,000 cars took part in the evacuation operation.
Miller estimated that 10,900 persons
evacuated the downtown business district at the time of the
test. This included 4,400 in vehicles and 6,500 on foot.
About 2,200 were evacuated by bus, he
added. Other estimates by CD officials included 7,700
evacuees from residential areas and 11,800 from industrial
plants.
Mayor John A. Scott announced,
meanwhile, the receipt of a congratulatory telegram from
President Eisenhower and a similar letter from Gov. George N.
Craig. Both praised the success of the operation.

RITES TO OPEM BLIND PROJECT Fragrance Garden To Be Dedicated July 7.
A Garden of Fragrance, designed
specifically for the pleasure of blind people, will be formally
dedicated here at 2 p.m. Thursday July 7, in Leeper Park.
The garden is located in the east
section of the park, around the pioneer cabin of Pierre
Navarre. It was instituted and sponsored by the South Bend
Garden Club with considerable assistance from the South Bend Park
Department which contributed the land and the lanscaping.
The dedication rites will be directed by
Mrs. Homer H. Zimmer, president of the Garden Club, and Mayor
John A. Scott will make the dedication address. Park
Superintendent Ralph Newman will participate, and among guests
will be members of the Optimist Circle and the Federation of the
Blind, two local clubs for blind persons.
The date was set for July 7 to coincide
with a state convention of blind people to take place here that
week end. Designed for
the Blind.
The garden has been designed
especially for the pleasure of the blind, with walks made of
crushed stone, and raised flower beds filled with hundreds of
fragrant flowers, shrubs and herbs. Benches have been
placed, and a hand rail will help to guide visitors to the
garden's entrance.
Included in the plantings are flowering
bulbs, but at present there are perennial and annual flowers in
bloom, including 15 varieties of scented herbs, many scented
bushes, petunias, marigolds, four-o'clocks, geraniums, pinks and
calendulas. Many blind persons have been visiting the
garden daily, enjoying the progress it has made.
Much of the material for the novel
garden has been contributed by friends of the project. The
hand rails were the gift of the Bendix Products Division, Bendix
Aviation Corp.; the top soil, bulbs, lilies, roses, and vines
have been given by nurseries; benches and bird baths have been
contributed and even sets of specially designed tools which the
blind can use themselves in a section of the garden designated as
a "therapy" section. Benefit Parties Help.
Cash contributions have been made
possible through benefit parties by various organizations.
The South Bend Garden Club will maintain
the garden through a perpetual fund. It was designed by
Stanley C. Goard, park department landscape architect, and the
park board did much of the actual work of putting in the
garden. The original idea was inspired by Mrs. Granville W.
Ziegler, who had read of a similar garden for the blind in
England. The South Bend garden is thought to be the only
one of its kind in this country.
Committees which have worked on the
project include Wendell Noell, material coordinator; Mrs. James
E. White, publicity; Mrs. Noell, treasurer; Mrs. William Barr,
corresponding secretary; Mrs. Ziegler; Mrs. Dugald C. Black,
state therapy chairman for the Garden Clubs of Indiana; Mrs. D.
C. Hay, state chairman, Indiana Garden Clubs; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey
M. Rohr, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. Bokon, Mr. and Mrs. M. K. Newman,
and Mr. and Mrs. N. D. Jackman.
