First Families of Floyd, Clark, and Harrison Counties

Tuesday, March 24, 2015

Time: 6:00 p.m.

Where: Jeffersonville Township Public Library, Jeffersonville, Indiana

If you are the direct descendant of a pioneer who lived in Floyd, Clark, or Harrison County, Indiana, before 1841,
the Southern Indiana Genealogical Society would like to recognize your ancestor and present you with a First Families
certificate. Approved First Families applicants will be special guests at the annual History and Heritage Celebration on
October 1. The celebration will include a pioneer-era social and an awards program.

A First Families workshop will be held March 24 at 6 PM at the Jeffersonville Township Public Library. Allison
Fredrickson, genealogy and local history librarian, will explain the First Families application process and suggest strategies
for researching early settlers in the tri-county area with an emphasis on Clark County.

The First Families Project began in 2013 to recognize early Floyd County pioneers and their direct living descendants
and to preserve those families’ histories. In 2014, the project expanded to include Clark and Harrison Counties. It has
documented 52 First Families ancestors with the surnames Akers, Applegate, Baker, Breedlove, Butts, Carr, Chew, Cole,
Coleman, Engleman, Fiske, Ferguson, Frank, Graves, Gray, Groce/Gross, Gullett, Hey, Kepley, Lafollette, Leach, Lee,
Lewis, Lyons, Mayfield, McCafferty, McCutchen, Moore, Piers, Phillippi, Piers, Rakestraw, Renn, Sampson, Scott, Scribner,
Smith, Tuley, Vernia, Walts, Wheeler, Woodruff, and Wolfe. The approved applicants live in eleven states, Canada, and England.

SIGS invites individuals to submit First Families applications and documentation proving direct descent from a resident of the
tri-county area prior to 1841. Applications can be found online at https://sites.rootsweb.com/~insigs/FF_2014/ffproject.htm

The deadline for submissions is September 1. SIGS members often assist individuals in their research to qualify for membership
in First Families. To schedule a meeting with a SIGS volunteer, email sigsvolunteer@gmail.com or phone 812-949-3527. SIGS
programs are held the first Thursday of every month at 7 PM at the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library and always fea-
ture a subject of historical or genealogical significance.
