Major General Nathaniel Banks

Although he had no military experience, Major General Nathaniel Banks was the North's third highest ranking general at the start of the Civil War. A former governor of Massachusetts and speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Banks was twice defeated by Jackson in the spring and summer of 1862.
