OBITUARY
Owen County Leader 2 Dec. 1915
Submitted by Peggy Adams
Alpha Need Moffet, wife of Clinton H. Moffett, and daughter of George and Jane Need, was born in Owen County on the farm which the parents now occupy, and departed this life on November 26, 1915 at 7 a.m. She was united in marriage with Clinton H. Moffett on September 8, 1912. To this union was born one child, Harold, who preceded his mother in death. This little rose-bud was not permitted to bloom here in this world of sorrow but 'Mamma and Baby' are reunited in that celestial City of God.
Mrs. Moffett was the only daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Need and had every wish granted as far as it was possible to do so. She and her husband looked forward to a long and happy and prosperous life, but love blinds our eyes to God's ways on Saturday evening, November 19, she was removed from the home of her parents to the M. E. Hospital in Indianapolis, where everything that medical science and skill could do was done for her. She was a patient sufferer and perfectly resigned to the will of "Him who doeth all things well."
She was converted at the age of 12 and united with the Methodist church at Pleasant Hill under the ministry of Rev. John Dyer and remained faithful to her vows.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. Eugene Melvin, Pastor of Patricksburg circuit from the Baptist church at Coal City, on Sunday afternoon, at 3 p.m. November 28

Greensburg, having suffered a heart attack. She was taken to the home May

MARTICIA MURPHY
Owen County Democrat--20 October 1927
Submitted by Kathy Bargerhuff
Marticia Murphy, daughter of Benjamin and Cynthia Truax Murphy, was born
in Monroe County, Indiana, March 11, 1846. Died October 5, 1927,. Aged 81
years, 6 months and 24 days.
She was afflicted for many years; suffering much of the time. She bore her
affliction with Christian fortitude.
In early life she confessed her faith in the Redeemer, which faith she
kept through life,
She was a member and loyal supporter of the Methodist Church.
She was united in marriage to Thomas Lapossa, March 20, 1869, who preceded
her in death. No children were born to this union, but their hearts and home
were ever open to the orphan, and the motherless child. They took into
their home first: Mamie Kelly, an orphan, and later Rachel Oneal and Bessie
Goss, motherless girls, who they adopted, fostering the three to womanhood.
Mamie and Bessie have passed to the Home beyond. Rachel survives and has
lovingly and dutifully cared for her foster parents until they were called
Home.
Aunt Marticia was one of whom it may be said truthfully, "Her cup of
blessing ran over". For all who came to her for help or sympathy, no one
was ever turned away empty handed or without a thought of Him who said:
"Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these, ye have done it
unto me."
She leaves an adopted daughter, Rachel, six foster grandchildren, and many
relatives and friends. Though she will be missed by many, we rejoice in the
assurance that a robe and a crown of righteousness and the Saviour's "Well
done, good and faithful servant," awaits her in the home where partings are
unknown.

MRS. JOHN H. MURPHY (Alice Ruth Patrick)#2
Mrs. John Murphy Comes to Close Of Long Illness
Owen County Democrat--10 March 1921
Submitted by Kathy Bargerhuff
Alice Ruth Patrick, youngest child of Chauncey B. and Mary Warner Patrick,
was born Sept. 25th, 1850, in Ottamwa, Ia., and departed this life March 2,
1921 in Spencer, Ind., aged 70 years, 6months, and 8 days.
The family moved to California shortly after the birth of their youngest
child. Owing to a sad reverse, in the death of the wife and mother, their
stay in California was exceeding - - - brief, and their thoughts turned
towards old associations and their early home life. The trip back home was
made by vessel around Cape ---orn and up to New Orleans, La., they were
detained there for some time through quarantine, but at last they landed at
Spencer, Indiana, and were welcomed home by the aged grandmother.
In the home to the rear of the Methodist church little Alice took her
first lessons in walking and from this home she went forth upon ---- ---
young life.
The Patrick family was an intense loyal family, the father and two sons
being soldiers in the great Civil War. Also the one to whom the subject of
this sketch was afterwards married was a soldier in the same --at war. Then
later, her only living son, Charles Murphy, was a soldier in the Spanish
American War. Her ---s were intensely American and --- ever stood for the
best in our ---ional life. From such homes and ---ugh such a lineage we
may look --- real National greatness. All ---r to the brave wives and
mothers of our land.
The subject of this sketch grew to beautiful womanhood, and on Apr. 9,
1871, she was united in marriage to John H. Murphy. The ceremony was
solemnized by Rev. J. W. Culmer in the old Methodist Church. To this union
were born four children, Charles, Paul, Gertrude, and Marie. Paul died in
early infancy and Gertrude at the age of four years. Charles lives near
Worthington, and Marie, now Mrs. William Thurgood, lives in Evansville.
Mrs. Murphy was early trained in the vital doctrines of Methodism, her
grandfather, Ebenezer Patrick, being an old time Methodist circuit rider.
Her grandmother was an exceptionally goodly woman, and the good seed sown
soon brought forth a blessed harvest. At an early age of 12 years Alice
Patrick was converted and joined the Methodist Church here in Spencer, and
for almost 60 years did she give to God and the Church of her choice the
best service she could command. All these years, with the exception of a
short period spent in Indianapolis, were given to church life here in
Spencer. She was exceptionally faithful to her church, and during the late
years even though in extreme weakness, she was often found in the house of
God. Her example was worthy of emulation.
For many years Mrs. Murphy has been an invalid and for the last 5 years
she has been a sufferer from that dread disease, creeping paralysis. Since
the 25th of last September the anniversary of her 70th birthday, she has
been confined to her bed. She has suffered intensely, but her faith in God
never wavered. Again and again has she declared her ------------------?
When death called our sister was ready, and without a shadow of a doubt
she went forth to meet her God. In the language of the great founder of
Methodism, John Wesley, "Our people died well," and on part of our departed
sister this saying has been well emphasized. Our sister has realized the
full force of the beautiful words of Tennyson, "I hope to see my Pilot face
to face, when I have crossed the bar."
Three brothers and two sisters mourn their loss; Albert and Howe Patrick
of Spencer; John Q. Patrick of Paragon; Mrs. Antoinette Peterson of
Cherryvale, Kansas; and Mrs. C. A. Hutchinson of Spencer. Besides these
there are her two children and two grandchildren, the one with whom she
traveled for almost 50 years in wedded life, Bro. John H. Murphy. And in
addition to these a host of friends meet with us today in deepest sympathy
and sorrow over the ravages of death. But --- wa sorrow not as those who
have no hope, for the hope of a blessed reunion in God's upper and better
kingdom comes to each----- ----- ---- sible heritage through faith. It is
"Good-night" now, but soon it will be "Good-morning", at the dawn of some
glad day in God's own good time.
