Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company Records
Indiana Harbor, Indiana
In 1913, Clayton Mark began to buy land in East Chicago, Indiana for a steel
manufacturing plant. In 1917 he begun construction for the Town of Mark, aka
Marktown. This was the first time an East Chicago industry built a town for its
employees. The town was designed by Chicago architect Howard Van Doren Shaw.
Original plans called for 30 sections, but only 4 were built, due to financial
problems. The design was based on English Garden City concept, including a
Market Square with a recessed garden and fountain in the center. For further
information on the History of Marktown, including pictures, go this
website.
Marktown has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1916, Clayton Mark broke ground for the Mark Manufacturing Company and it
begun its operations in East Chicago, across from Inland Steel, in 1917. In
1918, Mark Manufacturing merged with Schlesinger Brothers (raw materials) and
becomes the Steel and Tube Company of America.
In 1923, the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company of Youngstown, Ohio, purchased
all the property of the American Sheet Tube Company. In 2005, the ownership
changed to Mittal Steel Company. For more detailed history of the Youngstown
Sheet and Tube Company (1900-1949) please visit this
website.
At this website are images of the Indiana Harbor Works of the ore bridge and ore

the Chicago Area (Ph.D. thesis, University of Chicago, 1948), in 1929 there were
4,600 workers at the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Plant in Indiana Harbor. We have
