General Land Office Records

WINAMAC LAND OFFICE
Land records are an extremely valuable tool in locating an ancestor as a majority of the early populace bought land.

Originally, all land was owned by the Federal government, which was interested in getting settlers into the Northwest Territory. Various Land Offices were set up. The sixth Land Office was established at LaPorte, Indiana, on March 2, 1833. In the summer of 1839, the LaPorte Office was moved to Winamac, Indiana. The counties served by the LaPorte/Winamac Land Office were: Benton, Carroll, Cass, Elkhart, Fulton, Howard, Jasper, Kosciusko, Lake, LaPorte, Marshall, Miami, Newton, Porter, Pulaski, St. Joseph, Starke, Wabash and White. But in 1855, all the land offices were combined and land not already purchased was sent to Indianapolis. The price of the land sold ranged from $1.00 to $2.00 per acre, usually $1.25 per acre in Lake County (for cash) after 1820.
