Condition:
This cemetery is fenced and mowed, but not maintained. Fallen footstones
are flagged to prevent the mower from hitting them. Most stones are in decent
condition, but especially in the older southeast corner, many tablet stones
are broken, fallen, or leaning. Some stack stones are also leaning.. It is
across from a school, which may be a possible source for restoration assistance.
**Irena Hornaday gravestone found at the Washington Township Community Park
belongs in this cemetery. The stone was found by Keith Keppel about
30 years ago in the creek beneath the old iron bridge. He said that
he placed it in the ground on a little hill on his property (now the park)
because he didn't know where it belonged. The rumored story about an
old house burning and the cemetery behind it being bulldozed is not true.
Mr. Keppel lived in the house and said there was no cemetery. The
house did burn around 1980. Unfortunately, the stone was stolen from the
park and cannot be returned to the grave. An old photograph appears below.
