Condition:
This is a large town cemetery. The east half is the old section and
the west is the new section. The cemetery is nicely mowed and somewhat
maintained. There were very few stones that had fallen, but many that
were leaning by different degrees. About a dozen tablet stones were
broken with the pieces leaned against each other. Although the cemetery looks
at a glance to be complete, there are many footstones that don’t correspond
to the headstones or even have a headstone at all.
The Mill Creek Junior Optimist Club, under the direction of Jessica Felix,
did partial restoration in June of 2005. The group concentrated on small stones
since they lacked the manpower to tackle the large stack stones. Many
tablet stones and small stack stones were cleaned and reset. Large stones
were also cleaned. Five broken stones were nicely fixed and reset.
Although full restoration was not the goal, a lot of progress was made to
enhance the appearance of the cemetery and protect the stones.
There are still many large stack stones that need to be leveled. One
monolith is broken and balancing on itself with no support. There are
also a few more tablets and footstones that are leaning. Many stones still
need a good cleaning.
