Puckett/Howe

Puckett/Howe

"The wife of John Howe was the first person to be buried in the
Howe cemetery July 27, 1837." This is from the Grant County History
of 1885. This is the only record of Mrs. Howe since no stone marks
her last resting place in this small cemetery. It was at that time,
the old history says, "in the woods." Members of the family say that
this land was donated by one of the Howes for burial purposes. A
church of the Disciples denomination is near by. This cemetery is
not well kept altho it is in use at this time. Located in Center
Township east of Marion in Section # 14 near the village of Puckett.
The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's.
In 1965 a tornado went through the little village of Puckett and
destroyed most of it. Much of the damage at this cemetery is said to
have been caused by this disaster. The village was never rebuilt,
although there are many new homes going up in this area. This
cemetery is located just east of 512 E. on 200 S (otherwise known
in Marion as 38th Street) a few miles east of the Veterans Hospital.
I found that a good deal of the people buried in this cemetery are
from North Carolina, that settled in Monroe Township. Eleanor
(Hinshaw) Holloway - Moon is buried in this cemetery. She is the
famous midwife, known as "Granny Moon" that traveled around the
countryside from 1864 - 1891 delivering babies. It is said she
crocheted while she rode her horse to deliver over 300 babies in
Grant County. Eleanor was married to Jesse Holloway who died in
1849 then she married Thomas Moon, who is buried in the Backcreek
Cemetery in Fairmount Township. When she died she was buried as a
Holloway beside her first husband Jesse Holloway.
The cemetery is still used, but very infrequently. Most of the
older stones are badly weathered and almost illegible. Many are down
and broken. All footstones are either completely submerged in the
ground or stacked up with broken monuments. I recorded all footstones
with initials on them. A few didn't match the readings I obtained for
this cemetery, evidence of lost graves many years ago. The lay of the
land in this cemetery caused a lot of the damage. It slopes downward
to the east and this caused many of the monuments to topple over.
The oldest stone I found in this cemetery is Faitha wife of
Hezekiah Nelson, died Oct. 23, 1839 aged 28y.5m.11d. From this date
until 1848, there are no stones noted. I suspect they were lost even
before the turn of the century. Grave markers are still being placed
in this cemetery for future burials, showing renewed interest in another
one of "God's little acres".

	* Denotes a stone not found at this time.
