FAIRVIEW/HIX/BRADFORD CEMETERY

The Wesleyan Methodist people built a church in Washington Township Section #16 and called it Fairview. This was in 1862. The building was destroyed by fire some years ago and has never been rebuilt. Some of the leading members and trustees of that early day are buried here. The cemetery is not as frequently used as it was when the church building stood there. Hummel Creek flows to the south. The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's. I have heard this cemetery referred to by all the above names. Many Hix/Hicks and Bradfords are buried here. In May of 1994, I found this cemetery in very good shape. There is a nice driveway leading back to the cemetery that has been maintained. It had been freshly mowed for Memorial Day. Although I am rather disturbed at the new caretaker's idea of cleaning up the cemetery. They want to remove all the trees and take down the fence in the front. This will open it up so the privacy of this little place will be lost forever. When you go back into this cemetery you leave behind all the troubles of the world. It is very peaceful and lovely. Very little has been disturbed since the DAR read this in the 1940's. I do hope they change their minds and leave this as it is now. This cemetery is located in the N. 1/2 of the S.E. 1/4 of Section # 16 Range 8 E. Twp. 25 N. on the south side of 450 N. between State Road # 9 and 300 E. The following narrative was taken from "Whitson's History of Grant County" - 1914. "Fairview (Wesleyan Methodist) in the central part of the township was built in 1862 and dedicated in the same year. Services on dedication were conducted by Reverend Matlock of New York. The first trustees were Christopher Sears, Casper Bradford, Noah S. Bradford and George Camblin. One of the leading members of this church was Aunt Polly Bond. Her husband, Moses Bond, died in 1854 and for more than fifty years she remained loyal to his name, bearing the burdens and responsibilities of the home with unflinching courage. Her name was a household word in almost every home in Washington (Twp.) for more than a half a century. She was the mother of Joseph and Benjamin Bond, who were well and favorably known all over Grant county." 1996 update - the cemetery is now opened up to the road, the caretakers having gone about their business of cutting out all trees and vines. * Denotes a stone not found at this time.
