I'm researching the BLUE and HOPPUS families of Kosciusko and Elkhart counties. Both families had members who moved back and forth between the two counties because of work opportunities. So far I trace my Hoppus family back to: Solomon Hoppes b1826 Ohio (brother named Christian 1810-1893) George L. Hoppis (1843-1897) Homer Hoppus (1882-1940) Thurlow Hoppus (1906-1962) Note how the spelling of the name changed with the first three generations. The different spellings were taken from tombstones. Thurlow was my Grandfather. Solomon and brother Christian first bought land south of Warsaw in the Claypoole township. Later Christian moved to Packerton. In the late 1800's, George Hoppis moved his family to Warsaw and some family members still live there. Bill Blue has written a wonderful family history book on the Blue family that takes them all the way back to 1649 in New Amsterdam (Manhatten, NY) that is on file in the Kosciusko County Historical Library (the old jailhouse). I'm most interested in my branch of the family after they settled in Kosciusko and Elkhart. So far, on them I have: Michael Blue (1830 Ohio - 1889 Bremen, IN) Alvin Blue (1879 Kosciusko? - 1959 Warsaw, IN) Alma Blue (1905 - 1966 Warsaw, IN) Alma was my Grandmother and married to Thurlow Hoppus. Michael Blue was a drifter, at least I can't find any documentation that he stayed in any one place for long. He was married at twice, first to Lucy Ann Leibz (b 1839) and they had four children: Alwilda, Charles, Jerusha and Harriet. Michael's second wife was Lydia Snellenberger Troyer and they had Alvin and Louis. This was Lydia's second marriage. Michael died, possibly of a heart attack, while shoeing a horse for his brother-in-law, John Turnbull, who lived near Bremen. After Michael's death, Lydia married George Kellogg, and he helped raise her sons. But, for some reason, my GGrandfather always told everyone that he was an orphan and didn't know who his parents were. I'd love to know the basis for this story! I'm interested in collecting information on the descendents of Solomon and Christian Hoppis and Michael Blue. I'm very willing to share what I have already collected!
