Indiana Society Sons of the American Revolution
Youth Recognitions, Awards and Contests
The Daniel Guthrie Chapter is active in the community. The Chapter sponsors various youth programs and contests.
This contest will be directed at students in the 4th or 5th grades, depending on which grade year the American Revolution is taught in their educational system. The National Society Elementary School Poster Contest will stimulate interest in American History in support of the Fourth or Fifth Grade Curriculum. The topic for the Poster Contest will be set by the Americanism Committee at each Spring Trustee's Meeting for the upcoming fall school year.
The winner from each local school will compete at the Chapter level and the then the Daniel Guthrie Chapter winner will compete at State level. Once the Indiana Society has selected a winner, it will represent the Indiana at the National Level. The State Winners will be on display during National Contest and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Winners will be announced during National Congress. The top National winners will receive a Rosette Ribbon and a monetary award. First Place a $300 Educational Savings Bond, Second Place a $200 Educational Savings Bond, and Third Place a $100 Educational Savings Bond.

2016 Daniel Guthrie Chapter has its first "Poster Contest" entry. Mr. Josiah Smith, home schooled submitted his poster at the chapter meeting on Feb 16, 2016.
George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest
This contest is for writing an essay on an original researched and proven topic. The topic of the essay shall deal with: an event, person, philosophy, or ideal associated with the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the United States Constitution. This contest is open to all students who are United States citizens or legal aliens. Contestants shall be attending public, parochial, or private high schools (including accredited home schools). Contestants shall be in the sophomore, junior or senior grade of study during the contest year. Please read the the detailed rules.
The Daniel Guthrie Chapter winner's essay will be submitted to the Indiana Society SAR. The Indiana Society chooses a state winner and then submits that essay to the National SAR to determine the top three winners.
The top winner receives $2500 at the National SAR Congress, held in June or July each year, where the award is made. Second place receives $1000 and third place receives $500.

2017 Miss Melea Shockney, she took third place at Indiana SAR
2016 - Mr. Ian Zander from Edgewood High School, Ellettsville High School was
the chapter winner and received a certificate and $225 and read his essay at
the Feb 16th meeting. Mr. Zander was also selected by INSSAR as the
state winner and will be forwarded to National.
2011 Mr. Andrew Reuss. He received $100.00 and has been forwarded to Indiana SAR.
2007 - Miss Jessica Johnson from Edgewood High School Edgewood High School. Miss Johnson was also chosen to be the Indiana SAR entry into the National Competition. Her essay was on Mrs. Nancy Morgan Hart.
2006 - Miss Kelsey McGlocklin (C.A.R.) from Edgewood High School, Ellettsville, Indiana. Miss McGlocklin received a Certificate and neck ribbon with Medallion from President Robert P. Cunningham. Her essay was on the Presidents of the United States before President George Washington. Miss McGlocklin was also chosen to be the Indiana SAR entry into the National Competition.
Joseph S. Rumbaugh Oration Contest
This contest is open to all students who are United States citizens or legal aliens. Contestants shall be attending public, parochial, or private high schools (including accredited home schools). Contestants shall be in the sophomore, junior or senior grade of study during the contest year. The oration must be original of not less than five minutes or more than six minutes. The subject shall deal with an event, personality, or document pertaining to the Revolutionary War and show a relationship to America today. The oration must be essentially the same as the submitted manuscript. Notes and props (including military uniforms) may not be used in the presentation.
The Daniel Guthrie Chapter's winning entrant will be submitted to the Indiana Society SAR. The Indiana Society chooses a state winner and then submits it for possible competition at the SAR National Congress.
National First Place $3000 award, second place $2000 and third place $1000.

Joseph S. Rumbaugh Oration Contest Winners
2011 - We had two gentlemen who competed in the Oratory Speech Youth Contest. They were Andrew Reuss and Alexander Reuss. First place went to Andrew along with a check for $100.00 and second place to Alexander Reuss, who received a check for $75.00. Andrew will go to Indiana SAR to be judged for National Society SAR competition.
Arthur M. and Berdena King Eagle Scout Scholarship
This competition consists mainly of the Eagle Scout completing an application, completing a four generation ancestor chart, and writing and original essay, not to exceed 500 words, written on an American Revolutionary Patriotic Theme, with footnotes and bibliography. This annual competition is conducted on a calendar year basis. Any Eagle Scout who is still registered actively in a Scout unit, provided that he does not reach his 19th birthday in the calendar year of application, is eligible to enter.
The Daniel Guthrie Chapter's winning application will be submitted to the Indiana Society SAR. The Indiana Society chooses a state winner and then submits that application to the National SAR Eagle Scout Committee which meets in February or March of each year to judge state winner entries to determine the top three winners.
The national winner receives an $8000 Scholarship award at the National SAR Congress, held in June or July each year, where the award is made and the Eagle presents his essay to the assembly.
The first runner-up receives a $4000 award, and the second runner-up $2000, presented at State Society Meetings.

2016 Eagle Scout Jacob Aaron Lucia McDaniel received the Eagle Scout Patch, Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Certificate and a check for $225.00. Eagle Scout McDaniel was selected by INSSAR as the state winner and will be forwarded to National for judging.

2013 Eagle Scout Alexander McCahon Miller winner of the Eagle Scout Competition received the Certificate, Shoulder Patch, Eagle Scout Medal (Bronze Oak Leaf 2nd Award) and a check from the Daniel Guthrie Chapter.
2012 Eagle Scout Alexander McCahon Miller winner of the Eagle Scout Competition received the Certificate, Shoulder Patch, Eagle Scout Medal (Bronze Oak Leaf 2nd Award) and a check from the Daniel Guthrie Chapter.
2011 Eagle Scout Alex Miller received the Indiana SAR Eagle Scout Trophy, $600.00 a Certificate and private money was presented to him by Indiana SAR President C. David Betzner. Eagle Scout Alex Miller was sponsored by the Daniel Guthrie Chapter.
2011 The Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster (2nd Award) was presented to Eagle Scout Alexander McCahon Miller by Compatriot Eagle Scout Dr. T. Rex Legler II Chairman National Society SAR Eagle Scout Committee. Eagle Scout Miller took first place in Indiana SAR Eagle Scout competition.
February 17, 2009 Eagle Scout Medal, and Certificate was presented to Eagle Scout Alexander McCahon Miller by Compatriot Dr. T. Rex Legler II, National Society SAR Vice Chairman Eagle Scout Committee (Arthur M. King). He placed third in Indiana SAR Eagle Scout Scholarship competition.

ROTC/JROTC Recognition Program
The SAR awards the ROTC Medal to foster the principle of the citizen-soldier, exemplified by the Minutemen of Revolutionary War days. This award is presented by a Chapter, a State Society, or the National Society to ROTC or JROTC cadets who are selected for having a high degree of merit with respect to leadership qualities, military bearing and general excellence. The recipients are selected by the Commanding Officer of the ROTC or JROTC unit.
The Silver ROTC Medal is presented only to students in a college or university ROTC unit. The Bronze JROTC Medal is presented only to students in High School JROTC.
In 1997, the President General of the SAR authorized the enhancement of the JROTC program. Each Indiana SAR chapter will now select an Outstanding JROTC Cadet and enter that cadet into the State Society's Outstanding JROTC Cadet program. The winner of the State competition will be entered into the National Outstanding JROTC Recognition program. The winner of the national program will receive a special award at the SAR's National Congress, a gold star for the medal ribbon drape, a gold frame for the SAR ribbon bar, and a gold presentation medallion on a neck ribbon. The National Society will also provide a cash award of one thousand dollars ($1,000) and up to one thousand dollars in travel expense funds.
