Tombstone Sayings

TOMBSTONE SAYINGS

After working on the Mary Penrose Wayne DAR Cemetery Project for Allen Co., IN for several years we were continuously fascinated by the poems, bible verses, sayings, etc. that were inscribed on the markers. There were many that could not be transcribed due to the age and condition of the markers. We felt it was important to capture these sayings before they were totally eroded away and lost forever.

Many markers quoted a scripture reference from the Bible but the marker did not have the actual verse written on the marker itself. We have only included the verses that were written on the markers.

“The Broken Chain
We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone;
For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide;
And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same;
but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.”

“Don’t think of her as gone away – her journey’s just begun
Life holds so many facets - this earth is only one
Just think of her as resting from the sorrows and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort where there are no days or years
Think how she must be wishing that we could know today
How nothing but our sadness can really pass away
And think of her as living in the hearts of those she touched
For nothing loved is every lost—and she was loved so much.”

“A Letter From Heaven”
“There are some things I’d like to say. But first, let me assure you, I’ve arrived okay.
I’m writing this letter from heaven where I’m here with God above, and where
there are no more tears or sadness, just eternal love.
Please do not be said because I’m out of sight.
Remember that I’m with you every morning, noon, and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and he said, “I welcome you.
It’s good to have you back again. You were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they will join us later on.
Then God gave me a list of things he wanted me to do.
Foremost on that list of mine is to watch and care for you.
I will be beside you each day, each week, each year,
And when you’re sad, I’m standing there to wipe away each tear.
When you’re walking down the street and you’ve got me on your mind,
I’m walking in your footsteps just half a step behind.
When you feel a southern breeze blow gently across your face,
Remember it’s just me giving you a soft and warm embrace.
When you lie in bed at night and your prayers are said and done,
That’s when God and I are nearest, as we watch you with his son.
I wish that I could tell you the things that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you would not understand.
One thing is certain, now that my life on earth is over,
I am closer to you then I ever was before.
When you think of my life and all those too short years,
Because you’re only human, you may be brought to tears.
Please do not be afraid to cry for it helps relieve the pain.
There would not be flowers except for God’s sweet rain.
To each and every one of you, please trust that God knows best.
I’m still not far away from you, I’m just beyond the crest.
There are rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb,
but together we can do it taking one day at a time.
If you give unto the world so the world will give to you.
If you can say to God at night my day was not in vain.
Now I am content as my life it was worthwhile,
Knowing as I passed along I made somebody smile.
So if you need somebody who is down and feeling low,
Just lend a hand to pick them up as on your way you go.
And when it’s time for you to go from that body to be free,
Remember you are not going, you are coming to be with me.
I will always love you from this land way up above,
And I will be in touch again soon. P.S. God sends his love.”

“Life is but a gift to us,
It is the sweet and the bitter together
It is the dance of a knight under the moonlight and the swinging on branches of a crying tree
It is the bees and butterflies
It is the rainbow after a powerful storm
It is the golden sunrise and the red sunset
It is the glimmering stars in a dark night
It is the pyramids in Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea
The happiness and sadness
The pain and laughter
The smile and tears

Lift is but a gift to us.
It is the love and chocolate
It is the remembrance and the forgetfulness
It is the sleep and the sleepless
It is the Coca Cola and the tea with milk
It is the world which we are turning on
It is the nurturing mother
It is beautiful dreams and weird dreams
The sky and earth
The success and failure
The possible and impossible

Life is but a gift to us.
It is the East and the West
It is the English language and the Arabic language
It is the slang and the classic
It is the rich and the poor
It is the war and the peace
It is the sand and the ocean
It is the singing of the birds and the crying of the children
It is a human being and an animal
It is the child and the old lady
The past and future
The sun and rain
The confusion and understanding
Life is all these; more and more
Life is but a gift to us.” Cheri ‘96

“I am home in heaven, dear ones, Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty in this everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever, safely home in heaven at last.
Did you wonder I so calmly trod the valley of the shade?
Oh! But Jesus’ love illumined every dark and fearful glade.
And he came himself to meet me in that way so hard to tread;
And with Jesus’ arm to lean on, could I have one doubt or dread?
Then you must not grieve so surely for I love you dearly still;
Try to look beyond earth’s shadows pray to trust our Father’s will.
There is work still waiting for you, so you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth – you shall rest in Jesus’ land.

hope, we can say goodbye with hope cause we know our goodbye is not
the end, oh no, and we can grieve with hope cause we believe with hope
there’s a place where we’ll see your face again…
And never have I known anything so hard to understand, and never have I
questioned more the wisdom of Gods plan. But through the cloud of tears I
see the fathers smile and say well done, and I imagine you where you wanted
most to be…cause now you’re home seeing all your dreams come true, and
now you’re free. We have this hope as an anchor cause we believe that everything God promised us is true.”

How Do I Love Thee? By Elizabeth Barrett Browning
“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.”

things. Each day they teach us lessons in trust and steadfast affection. Whatever
heaven must be, there is surely a place in it for our animal friends.” George & Marie

How do we know what flowers will bloom from seeds of yesterday
What songs are sung and dreams begun because she passed this way.
How do we measure the shining place that time can never pale
In all the hearts that cheered her on and willed her to prevail
How did her spirit soar beyond the suffering and the scars
To live with one hand clutching hope and the other on the stars
We may not know what she left behind on the difficult path she trod
But we know this much her life’s brief touch was from the hand of God.”

“Days come and days go, and we know there will be no joy in the world for us. Slowly weeks pass by

To Be Young Again?
“Life begins at seventy and I haven’t long to wait.
May twenty-seventh I will open the Golden Gate,
I will go into a garden; I will not be alone
For Jesus, my Redeemer, Will be there very soon.
There’s the tree of understanding and the tree of knowledge too;
Two gifts God has given, both to me and both to you.
Use them wisely, O my reader, which I’m sure that you will do.
Oh, the pretty flowers! Their fragrance fills the air.
As, yes, the pretty, pretty song birds are singing everywhere.
Come walk late this garden; you’ll love it like I do.
Smell the perfume of the roses in the early morning dew.
No artist ever palated the beauty that you’ll see,
If you’ll come into God’s garden and walk along with me.
There is no darkness gathering; we have daylight all the while.
There is no sadness waiting, you’ll always have a smile.
Now, seventy is a nice young age, I’m glad I am that old;
The things I’ve seen, the good times I’ve had, are worth their weight in Gold.
Time has passed so swiftly; I’ve stood all kinds of weather;
So, to be young again, my reader! Oh, no, never!” Ora Myers May, 1968
