SUMMERS, IDA BUSBY

Winchester Times, May 4, 1948

MRS. GEORGE LEVI SUMMERS

Ida Busby, daughter of Dr. Andrew Jackson and Mary Busby, was born in Coshockton County, Ohio, April 19, 1866, and died at the home of her son, Howard, six miles southeast of Winchester, Ill., April 29, 1948, at 7:15 a.m., age 82 years and 19 days. As a small child she moved with her parents to Kansas in 1870. Later the family settled in Montgomery County, Kansas, in 1881, where Dr Busby practiced his profession for about 50 years, being the horse and buggy doctor. On Aug. 6, 1881, she was married to Walter Carter, who passed away in 1884. To this union one son was born, Claude T Carter of Cherryvale Kansas. She was married to Geo. L. Summers of Winchester, Ill., Feb. 19, 19885, at Independence, Kansas. They came to Illinois in the fall of 1886 and lived in the community near and in Manchester, Ill., until their death.

To this union nine children were born, Mrs. Hare McCarty, Howard and Frank Summers of Winchester, Levi George Summers of Porter Ind., Mrs. Lola Dell Wages of Pelican Rapids, Minn. She was proceeded in death by her husband, who passed away April 27, 1939, one daughter Pleda Maude, and three sons, Homer Bugsby, Clyde William and Harvey Leo Summers.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Lura Orr, of Portland, Oregon, the above mentioned children, 21 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

She was of a cheerful disposition and made many friends, was a lover of music and social life, a kind and loving wife and mother. She was a member of the Baptist church.

Funeral services were held at the Danner Funeral Home at two o'clock, Sunday afternoon, may 2, 1948 at two o'clock Rev. C. L. Leitze officiating.

Selections were sung by Miss Beilby Leach, accompanied by Mrs. Roy Coultas.

The flowers were cared for by Lucille Summers, Virginia Summers, Sylvia Sellars and Ethel Johnson.

Interment was in the Winchester cemetery, the casket bearers being Francis, James, Robert, Darrell, Wilbur and Cleo Summers.


SUMMERS, GEORGE LEVI

Manchester Times, May 2, 1939

George L. Summers, 77, died at 1:25 a.m., Thursday, April 27, 1939, at his home in Manchester, after a few days illness. He had been in poor health for the past two years, but was bedfast only a week. Death was due to heart trouble.

He was born on the Summers homestead seven miles southeast of Winchester in the Harts neighborhood. He was married in 1886 in Kansas to Ida Busby Carter, and she survives, with two children, two brothers and one sister.

With the exception of three years he spent in Kansas, Mr. Summers lived in Scott County. For the past twenty years he had been a resident of Manchester.

Funeral services were held at the Manchester Methodist church at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon, with Rev. Fred Peak of Pleasant Hill officiating.

Vocal selections were given by Miss Louise Pearce and Mrs. Thressa Landon, who sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "Going Down The valley," and "Lead Kindly Light." Mrs. C. S. Heaton was the accompanist.

Those in charge of Flowers were Miss Martha Butler of Woodson, Mrs. Chas. Grady, Jacksonville, Mrs. Lloyd Johnson of Springfield, Mrs. Cleo Summers, Lynnville, and the Misses Margaret and Helen Smith of Manchester.

The Casket bearers were Francis, James, Daryll, and Robert Summers of Woodson, Chas Grady of Jacksonville, and Cleo Summers of Lynnville. Interment was in the **Manchester Cemetery.

Casey and mother, Clark Butler of Woodson; Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Patterson and daughter, Mrs. Stella Summers and son, Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Summers, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Sellars of Lynnville; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Summers of Ashland; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Summers and son of Rushville; Miss Margaret Summers and Wayne Summers of Wrights; Mr. and Mrs. Olin Dawson and son , Mr. and mrs. SUMMERS, HOMER CLEO

Jacksonville Journal Courier, April 13, 1988

WINCHESTER - Cleo "Bud" Summers, 73, of Route2, Winchester, died Tuesday morning, April 12, at Memorial Hospital in Springfield.

He was born in Scott County, Feb. 13, 1915, a son of Homer B. and Estella Whewell Summers.

He was married to Mary Agnes Carlton in Springfield, Mo., Nov., 5, 1938, and she survives with two sons, Gary and Rex, and a daughter Mrs. Danny (Sandy) Neff, all of rural Winchester, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Two brothers, John Smith and Leo L., and a sister Mabel Sellars preceded him in death.

He was engaged in farming.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester with burial in Winchester City Cemetery. Visitation after 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, family to meet friends 7 to 9 p.m.

SUMMERS, MARY AGNES CARLTON

Mary Agnes Summers, 85, of rural Winchester, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 11, 2001, in Vicksburg, Miss. of natural causes while visiting family.

She was born Nov. 14, 1915 in Pittsfield, the daughter of Jess and Maggie Carlton. She married Homer Cleo "Bud" Summers Nov. 5, 1938, in Springfield, Mo., and he preceded her in death on April 12. 1998.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Neff of Winchester; two sons, Rex and Gary, both of Winchester; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson.

Mrs. Summers was a member of the Lynnville Christian Church. She lived and farmed with her husband south of Lynnville. She worked at J.C. Penny for many years, retiring in 1981. She enjoyed her family, camping and travel.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Coonrod Funeral home in Winchester, with burial at the Winchester City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where the family will meet with friends from 6-8 p.m.


SUMMERS, LEO L.

Jacksonville Journal Courier, March 15, 1984

Winchester - Leo L. Summers, 56, of rural Griggsville died March 14, 1984, at home of his brother, Cleo Summers, R.R. 2, Winchester.

He was born Nov. 14, 1927 in Scott Co., son of Homer and Estella Whewell Summers. His first married Mary Wilma Landes and later married Elizabeth Mae Evers.

He is survived by the following children; Ricky Summers of Oregon, Donna Saturnia of Plantation, Fla., and Teena Fifer and Brad Summers, both of Davenport Iowa; three grandchildren; and a brother, Cleo Summers of rural Winchester.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Sellars, and a half-brother, John Smith.

Mr. Summers was an Army veteran.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester. Interment will be in the Winchester City Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends 7 to 9 p.m.


SUMMERS, MABEL SUMMERS

Jacksonville Journal Courier, January 3, 1977

Winchester - Mabel Sellars, 64, of Winchester died at 5:32 a.m. Saturday, January 1, 1977 at Passavant Hospital.

She was born in Scott County February 21, 1913, daughter of Homer and Estella Whewell Summers. She married Russell Sellars in Hannibal, Missouri August 27, 1931. He preceded her in death as did her parents and a half brother, John H Smith.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Jim (Slyvia) Saffer of Ft. Collins, Colorado; Mrs Dick (Melba) Brogdon, Jacksonville; and Mrs. Tom (Mary) Steelman of Winchester; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren; two brothers, Cleo Summers of Winchester and Leo Summers of Griggsville. She was a member of the Winchester First Baptist Church.

Services will be held Wednesday, January 5, 1977, at 2 p.m. at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester with the Rev. Robert Bowman officiating. Burial will be in the Winchester City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 2 p.m. Tuesday, with family meeting friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Winchester Public Library.


WHEWELL, MARY ELLEN HART

Mary Ellen Hart, second daughter of Mary Ann and Henry Hart, was born Dec. 17, 1851, in the community of Harts school house and passed away Feb. 16, 1934, being 82 years, one month and 29 days old.

She spent her entire life within a few miles of where she was born. She attended school at the Hart's school, became a member of West Union Baptist Church while still young, an act she cherished to the last. She lost her father when she was two years old.

When she was 17 years she married John Whewell, also of the community and to this union were born six children, three boys and three girls, namely; Mrs. Maria Elliott who passed away in 1927; Mrs. Anna Bunch, living near Manchester; Harry, who passed away in 1911; Otis, living on the home place; Edgar, who died in 1925, and Estella Summers with whom she has made her home since the demise of her husband in 1911.

"Aunt Ellen' as all who knew her like to speak of her, was a great lover of children, flowers and her home. Her great pleasure seemed to be to have children around, and some flowers, and her home was always open to friends.

She leaves to mourn her loss besides her children; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Hodges of Trehie, Mo.; one half-brother, William Stringer and one half-sister, Mrs. Etta Schoefield, both of Harts vicinity and Mrs. Laura Cockerell, another half-sister of Manchester; two half-sister, Mrs. Maggie Fletcher and Miss Mattie Stringer having precede her to the beyond.

She leaves also 22 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. A large number of nephews and nieces and a world of friends.

Funeral Services were conducted from the Christian Church in Lynnville, Sunday afternoon, Feb. 18, at two o'clock, Rev. F.V. Wright officiating, assisted by Rev. L.R. Gerber.

Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Yale Potter with Virginia Heaton as accompanist. The flower girls were Helen Smith, Nellie Fisher, Mabel Sellars, Belle Whewell, Mae Elliott, and Vera Cumley.

Interment was in the Winchester City Cemetery, the pall bearers being Raymond Whewell, Allen Whewell, Irvin Whewell, Harry Elliott, John Smith and Earl Elliott.

The pallbearers were grandsons and the flower girls were granddaughters.

SUMMERS, LUCILLE ELISE BALKE

Lucille Elise Balke Summers, 94, of Springfield, and formerly of Winchester, passed away Friday morning, July 4, 2008, at St. John's Hospital.

She was born March 19, 1914, near Winchester, the daughter of F.H. "Henry" and Lydia Krueger Balke.

She married Francis Andrew Summers on July 6, 1946, in Winchester. He preceded her in death Nov. 30, 1993. Also preceding her were four sisters, Amelia Baird, Frieda Balke, Wilma Westermeyer and Erna Lawless; and two brothers, Carl Balke and Merle Balke (surviving wife, Charlotte of Winchester).

Surviving is her son Bud (wife Bonnie) Summers of Glasgow; two grandchildren, Sonya Summers of Springfield and Randy Summers of Winchester; and two great-grandchildren, Drew Summers of Winchester and Haley Summers of Beardstown.

She was a 1932 graduate of Winchester High School. She was a graduate of Browns Business College. She was employed at the Winchester High School as secretary for 47 years. She was a very active member of the Winchester United Methodist Church, where she was the financial secretary for many years. She was involved with the Sunday school programs and helped with the 4-H clubs and the South Scott Saddle Club.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Winchester United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Winchester City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Monday at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester, where the family will meet friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Winchester United Methodist Church or Help at Home group in Springfield.
