WINCHESTER CEMETERY

Section 29, Twp 14N, Range 12W
Scott County, Illinois

Winchester Cemetery is a lovely, well-maintained cemetery which sits just outside the city. It is situated on rolling ground, with the older burials found in the north end of the cemetery. The newest section of this cemetery is located down the road approximately one quarter of a mile and sits on the opposite side of the road.

Four good friends, part of the "Menard County Cemetery Crew", (Stan & Jeanie Lowe and Duane & Betty Albert) spent an afternoon with me recently and we began to work on the oldest section of the cemetery. Thanks to these four for the much appreciated help and good company. Many of the stones are very old - dating to the 1840s and 1850s. As a consequence, some of them are very difficult to read, many are broken and, given the empty areas, many graves are not and may never have been marked.

This transcription is complete .... at last!!! Many many thanks to Don Hayes who drove down from Moline and spent the weekend helping me finish the reading of this large cemetery. There is no way to tell you how much I truly appreciate the help. There were several dozen stones throughout the cemetery which were weathered so much they are now illegible - no doubt there are more burials with no stones. If you have information/documentation showing additional burials in this cemetery, let me know and I'll add the additional names and information to the transcription on line here.
