George Meier, a pioneer resident of Scott County, died Tuesday evening at his home east of Bluffs from heart disease. For nearly half a century he had made that part of the country his home, coming there from Germany, where he was born 74 years ago. He had always followed the occupation of a farmer and was a man whom every one honored and respected. He was a member of the Lutheran church of Neeleyville.
He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Anna Peak, of Iowa: Mrs. Margaret Reick, of this city: Mrs. Henry Rebbe, Miss Minnie Meier and Henry Meier of the Bluffs neighborhood and Prof. William H. D. Meier of Boston, Mass. He also leaves one brother, Barney Meier of Ottumwa, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Herman Schuessler of Bluffs. The wife has been dead a number of years. His son, Prof. Meier was a former well known school teacher in this section of the state. He taught for a number of years in Scott County and later went to Havana, where he was principal of the city schools, also principal at Mason City. Two years ago, he moved his family to Cambridge, Mass., where he took a post-graduate course in Harvard university. Since finishing the work he has been teaching in the east.
