HAYES, KATIE A.

Unknown newspaper - July, 1944

Obituary

Katie A. Hayes, youngest child of M. and M. E. Hayes, was born in Manchester, Nov. 9, 1885, and slipped away to the other shore at dawn, July 26, 1944, released from the handicap of a defective heart which had burdened her since childhood.

She left three sisters Effie, wife of J. M. Overton of Winchester and Lena and May Hayes, whose constant attendance at the bedside tided over the days of suffering. There is also one nephew, R. M. Overton, of McKeeysport, Penn., and a number of cousins.

A strong will and intense unselfishness dominated her life, which was crowded with its hidden benevolences. She taught school many ears not only through textbooks but also by example and she has been granted the satisfaction of a rich harvest in the development and devotion of pupils who responded to the beloved teacher's training, and filled her later years with joy.

She was a member of Manchester Baptist church, and taught classes in Sunday school to the limit of her strength, always giving the second mile in her christian activities. Hers was a brave soul that faced death with the courage of a victorious faith. If to tarry longer meant pain for her one may not wish her back but her going away leave the family bereft indeed.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 28th, at the Manchester Baptist church. Rev. F. V. Wright of Winchester was in charge. The many beautiful flowers were cared for by Mr. And Mrs. Harry Powers, Mrs. Albert Powers, Mrs. George Cooper and Mrs. Darrell Travis. Piano music was played by Mrs. Schofield of Lynnville.

The casket bearers were Henry Hudson, Chris. Heaton, Leonard Cooper, Wm. Andras, Howard Longdon and Horace Heaton. Interment was made in the family lot in the Manchester cemetery. There were several from a distance who attended.
