SPENCER, SULA BELLE SMITH

Sula Belle Spencer, 96, of the Roodhouse and Murrayville areas, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at the Jacksonville Convalescent Center.

She was born Aug. 22, 1908, near Greenfield, the daughter of Moses J. and Elsie Barnett Smith. She married John P. Spencer in 1949, in Murrayville, and he preceded her in death Jan. 22, 1995.

She is survived by one sister, Ruby Spencer of Rockford; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Leslie, Dean and Harvey Smith; and two sisters, Marcella Smith and Bessie Wankel.

Mrs. Spencer graduated from Murrayville High School in 1928 and from MacMurray College in 1959. She was an elementary teacher for 35 years, having taught in country schools for 15 years and 20 years in the Murrayville Grade School. She was a member of the East Union Baptist Church where she served as pianist and Sunday school teacher for about fifty years. She liked sewing, quilting, church work and cooking.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mackey Daws Funeral Home in Roodhouse, with burial at Manchester Cemetery. Visitation will be two hours prior to services Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the East Union Church.


HARTZ, BEATRICE INEZ WILLIAMS

Beatrice Inez Hartz, age 86, of Manchester, died Wednesday evening, Aug. 4, 2004, at NBA Barton Stone Christian Home in Jacksonville.

She was born April 4, 1918 in Roodhouse, the daughter of Earl and Eva Burton Williams. She married John W. Hartz Aug. 16, 1947 at Winchester and he preceded her in death May 20, 2000.

She is survived by one son, John (wife, Lynda) Hartz of Woodson; one daughter, Eileen (husband, Robert) Hull of Manchester; seven grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 22 step-great-grandsons and two great-great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by one son, Gail Williams; one daughter, Cathy Neff; and two brothers, Lionel Williams and Durward Williams (surviving wife, Irene of Roodhouse).

Mrs. Hartz was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church near Alsey. After her marriage, she worked at Nesco in Jacksonville for several years and at the White Hall Dress Factory. She, her husband and her son, Gail, operated John's Greenhouse in Manchester for many years. She loved flowers, gardening and her grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church near Alsey with burial at the Manchester Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Roodhouse was in charge of the arrangements. BOLTENHOUSE, JENNY JO STONE

Jenny Jo Stone Boltenhouse, 41, of East Polo Alto, Calif. and formerly of Manchester, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at her residence.

She was born March 13, 1963 in White Hall, the daughter of John and Beverly Ballard Stone. She married John Boltenhouse; they later divorced.

Miss Stone graduated from Winchester High School, and was a veteran of the United States Army. She loved spending time with her pets and in her flower gardens.

She is survived by her mother, Beverly Stone of Manchester; four brothers, Eldon "Squeak" (companion Kelly Burton) of Rockford, Ronald "Poke" (wife, Cyndi) of Detroit Ill., Gerald (wife, Pam) of Jerseyville and Weldon "Chief" (wife, Pam) of Manchester; two sisters, Karen Pilkington of Chester and Lila "Toots" (husband, Donnie) Bratsch of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Stone and one nephew in infancy.

Cremation rites have been accorded with remains to be shipped home. Graveside rites will be held Saturday, Aug. 28 at the Manchester City Cemetery in Manchester.


STRONG, ROBERT L.

Robert L. Strong, 84, of Greenfield, died Wednesday morning, July 6, 2005, at the White Hall Multicare Center.

He was born Oct. 26, 1920, in East Peoria, the son of Robert Clifford and Goldie Marie Jones Strong. He married Sadie Marie Hudson on Aug. 28, 1942, in Chicago, and she preceded him in death June 17, 2001.

He is survived by several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Mr. Strong was employed by the Chicago Modern Platting Co., as a chrome plater. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he earned three Overseas Service Bars, a Good Conduct Medal, five European Battle Stars and one Silver Battle Star. He served many years on the Greenfield Public Library Board and was proud to be on the building committee of the new library.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield, with burial at Manchester City Cemetery. Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Greenfield Public Library.


ZONZO, EVA WELLS

Eva Wells Zonzo, 83, of Flanagan, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Streator.

She was born May 30, 1921, in Manchester, the daughter of Harry L. and Leatha Jane Cotter Wells. She married Anthony Zonzo in July of 1964, and he preceded her in death.

She is survived by one sister, Doris (husband, Bud) Reynolds of Pekin; one niece; and three nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Harry Jr., Clarence and Edward (surviving wife, Ruby, of Indianapolis) Wells.

Mrs. Zonzo was a member of the Baptist faith.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Manchester Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Cody & Son Memorial Home in Jacksonville is in charge of arrangements.


ALLEN, HAZEL MARGARET VAN TUYLE

Hazel Margaret Van Tuyle Allen, 89, of Carrollton, died Monday April 19, 2004, at Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in Carrollton.

She was born Oct. 30, 1914, in Manchester, the daughter of Robert and Florence Van Tuyle.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna Hutchinson of Nokomis, Fla., and Dotty (husband, Judge James) Day of Carrollton; four grandchildren, Jennifer Day Hooper, D.V.M. of Citrus Springs, Fla., Heather Keasler of Ottawa, James Allen Day, attorney of Springfield, and Julie Keasler of Ft. Myers, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Jordan Keasler of Ft. Meyers, Fla., and Ethan James Hooper of Citrus Springs, Fla., and one sister, Edith Van Tuyle Phelan of Golf. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Henry and Robert Van Tuyle.

Mrs. Allen graduated from Roodhouse High School in 1932. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Illinois State University in Normal. She taught in Manchester, Carrollton and North Greene schools. After her retirement, she served as a substitute teacher in both North Greene and Carrollton schools. Many students remember her help with leaf, wild flower and insect collections, as she had an avid interest in science.

Her passions included travel, tennis, bowling, bridge club, gardening, nature hikes, reading and spending time with her grandchildren. Over the years she was a member of two bridge clubs, the Retired Teachers Association, the American Legion Auxiliary, the East End Reading Circle, and a bowling team. She traveled on multiple adventures after her full retirement, enjoying NASA sponsored trips to witness comets and full solar eclipses. She also traveled to see several space shuttle launches in Florida. Always the teacher, Mrs. Allen often took her grandchildren along for the educational value of these interesting adventures. A huge sports enthusiast, she closely followed the Fighting Illini teams, particularly basketball, where she enjoyed season tickets for more than eight years. She even made up scrapbooks to present to the senior players and their families at the end of each season at the annual basketball banquet. An avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, Mrs. Allen attended many spring training camps in Florida. She counted Jack Buck, the late Cardinals longtime announcer, and former players such as Lou Brock and Al Hrabosky as personal friends. Mrs. Allen also followed the Lady Hawks basketball program. Affectionately known as "Grams" by all who knew her, she will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Per Mrs. Allen's request, no public funeral service or visitation will be held. A private burial service will be held at Manchester Cemetery. Mrs. Allen also requested no flowers, rather a donation to her Memorial Fund or memorial of your choice. Memorials may be made to the Hazel Allen Memorial Fund P.O. Box 206, Carrollton, IL 62016. Donations to this fund will go toward a special landscaping project at Reisch Memorial Nursing Home, Manchester Cemetery Fund and for scholarships to graduating seniors of Carrollton and North Greene high schools. HORNBEEK, RUSSELL L.

Russell L. Hornbeek, 69, of Manchester, died Thursday afternoon, Dec. 10, 1998, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

He was born Aug. 20, 1929, in Winchester, the son of Russell A. and Mabel Sutter Hornbeek. He married Doris Hayes and she preceded him in death on May 15, 1968.

He is survived by his mother of Winchester; two sons, Daniel L. (wife, Barbara) of Elyria, Ohio, David L. (wife, Kathy) of Glendale, AZ.; one daughter, Susan E. of Springfield; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Albert of Springfield; and a companion, Cora E. Smock of Manchester.

Mr. Hornbeek was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Sandy Creek Saddle Club, Paso Fino Horse Breed Club, past member of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 113 of Morgan County where he served on the Advisory board and as a Boy Scout leader. He was also a member of the Methodist Church. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, at the Mackey-Daws Funeral Home in Murrayville with the Rev. Gerald Ray Phillips officiating. Organist wsa Gladys Huff.

Pallbeares were Harry Pate, Jim Pate, Terry Goodall, Jay Hornbeck, Mike Smock and Steve Smock.

Burial was at the Murrayville City Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Boy Scouts of America or Murrayville- Woodson EMS.


MCKEAN, ELOISE HAYS

Eloise H. McKean, 76, of rural Roodhouse and Murrayville area, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

She was born June 21, 1927, in Manchester, the daughter of Junior E. and Verna Blakeman Hays. She married Charles E. McKean on July 23, 1949, in Lynnville, and he survives.

She is also survived by one son, William C. (wife, Joyce) of rural Roodhouse; one daughter, Janis (husband, Richard) Schenebricker of Colona; and two granddaughters. She was preceded in death by one grandson; and one sister, Doris Hornbeek.

Mrs. McKean was a long time member of the Franklin United Methodist Church, had served as a county election judge and loved to square dance.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mackey Daws Funeral Home in Murrayville, with burial at Manchester Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where family will meet friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Murrayville-Woodson EAS Condolences may be left for the family online at mackeydaws.com
