MERRIS, CHERYL LEE

Cheryl Lee Merris, 52, of Jacksonville, and formerly of Bluffs and Springfield, died Wednesday, Jan 30, 2002 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

She was born April 20, 1949, in Jacksonville, the daughter of William Dale and Myra June Williamson Merris. They survive in Jacksonville.

She is also survived by one brother, William Jr.; of Eugene, Ore., one niece, Heidi Merris; one nephew, Zachary Merris, one step-nephew, Travis Saunders; six aunts; Ruth Hart, Opal Hullinger and Dolores Rolf, all of Bluffs, Mildred Barkley of Jacksonville, and Essie Hyatt and Helen Poff, both of Walnut Creek, Calif.; two uncles, Don Henard of Marion and Ralph Henard of Boulder, Colo. and many cousins.

Miss Merris attended Bluffs schools where she graduated as salutatorian of her class. She graduated from Western University at Macomb with a degree in English. She taught elementary school at Eisenhower School for two years. She then worked for the state of Illinois in the conservation office.

She was a member of the Bluffs United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Mackey Daws Funeral Home in Bluffs. Burial was at Green Cemetery near Bluffs.

Memorials are suggested to Passavant Hospital or Laborer's Home #4, Tenants' Council.


JONES, LEAH O'BRIEN

Leah O'Brien Jones, 77, of Moweaqua and formerly of Bluffs, died at 12:14 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. she was born September 23, 1923, in Bluffs, the third child of Maurice F. and Bess Thompson O'Brien. She married Ralph J. Jones April 5, 1947, in Winchester and he preceded her in death January 24, 1993.

Surviving are two sons, Steven Ralph Jones of Moweaqua and Brien Lee Jones of Bermuda Dunes, Calif.; grandchildren; Michael Christopher Jones of Bluffs, Justin Cole Jones, JayLee Corene Jones and Aaron Lee Jones, all of Bermuda Dunes, Calif., Samuel Jones of Moweaqua, and Alan Hinkle; two great-granddaughters, Amy and Jamie Jones of Bluffs; one great-grandson, Kolby Hinkle; one niece, Lynne Evans Hoots of Bluffs, and a nephew, Thomas Lee Hart of Springfield.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Adam Ray and Michael Maurice Jones, a sister, Jean Hart Evans, a brother, Thomas Maurice O'Brien, and various other relatives.

Mrs. Jones was a graduate of Bluffs High School class of 1941. She retired in 1981 following many years in various adventures including 18 years as a publisher of The Bluffs Times, The Meredosia Budget and The Calhoun Herald, and Secretary for Illinois Veterans' Commission in Winchester.

Mrs. Jones was also a veteran of WWII, where she served in the WAVES, a branch of the U.S. Navy. She was a member of Charles Wolford American Legion Post 441 since December 1945, serving at times as commander, adjutant, and chaplain at her local post.

Funeral service was 4 p.m. Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Mackey Daws Funeral Home in Bluffs with burial at Green Cemetery in Bluffs. Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Bluffs-Meredosia Rescue Squad.


LAWRENCE, MARCELLA MAY ALBERS

Marcella May Lawrence, 83, of Bluffs died Friday morning, Nov. 23, 2001, at the Prairie Village Health Care Center in Jacksonville.

She was born May, 1, 1918, in Naples, the daughter of Clarence and Georgia Graham Albers. She married Coil E. Lawrence Aug. 10, 1935 in Missouri, and he preceded her in death in 1987.

She is survived by two brothers, William Albers of Vacaville, Calif. and Sherel (wife, Betty) Albers of Rochelle; two sisters, June Albers and Connie Brockhouse, both of Bluffs, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers. Paul "Joe," Myron "Buck," Kenneth and Robert Lee Albers.

Mrs. Lawrence was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Bluffs. She worked with her husband on the family farm.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Green Cemetery near Bluffs. Memorials are suggested to the Bluffs Rescue Squad.


WILDAY, VIRGINIA L. GREEN

Virginia L. Wilday, 85, of Atlas, died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

She was born Oct. 12, 1919 in Bluffs to John R. and Ollie J. Smith Green.

She is survived by one daughter, Janice (husband, Dale) Buhlig of Bluffs; four grandchildren, Cathy (husband, Robert) Sandman of Bluffs, Craig Buhlig of Branson, Mo., Sherri (husband, Steve) Littig of Bluffs, Steve Buhlig of Granite City; nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mabel, Stella and Eva; and four brothers, Cap, Bud, Buss and Edwin; and her longtime friend Paul Guthrie.

Miss Wilday was a member of the Elmwood Presbyterian Church in Louisiana, Mo. She was the director of the Trimble House Senior Citizen Center.

Cremation rites will be accorded. Graveside services will be held at Green Cemetery near Bluffs at a later date. A memorial service will be held at Elmwood Presbyterian Church at a later date, also. HULLINGER, OPAL JANE MERRIS

Bluffs - Opal Jane Hullinger, 82, a lifetime resident of Bluffs, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

She was born June 30, 1922, in Bluffs, the daughter of Charles Edward and Grace Thompson Merris. She married Clyde A. Hullinger on Sept. 5, 1942, in Bowling Green, Mo., and he preceded her in death May 6, 2003.

She is survived by two daughters, Janet Kay (husband, Ronald) Novak of Downers Grove and Pamela Sue (husband, Charles) Gregory of Bluffs; four grandchildren, Gregory (wife, Amanda) Novak of Elgin, Bradley (wife, Alice) Novak of Foster City, Calif., Jenette Gregory (husband, Rick) Spurbeck of San Angelo, Texas, and Holly Gregory (husband, Kyle) Fuller of Des Moines, Iowa; five great-grandsons; one sister, Ruth Hart of Bluffs; and one brother, William (wife, June) Merris of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward Merris, Charles Raymond Merris, James Merris and Robert Merris; and three sisters, Helen Cox, June Erickson and Mildred Barkley.

Mrs. Hullinger loved the Lord and her church family. She was a longtime member of the Bluffs United Methodist Church. She also served for many years on the Benjamin Green Cemetery Board. At the time of their retirement, she and her husband owned and operated Hullinger's Texaco Service Station. She was a master bridge player for over 40 years. She loved entertaining her family and was a marvelous cook. She always cared for the needs of others.

Memorials services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Mackey Daws Funeral Home in Bluffs, with burial at Benjamin Green Cemetery near Bluffs. Family will meet friends one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Parkinson's Foundation or the Bluffs United Methodist Church.
