COX, JULIA A. MORRISON

(Some errors having occurred in the obituary of Mrs. Julia A. Cox, when it was published at the time of her death, we republished it herewith this week, together with her portrait. -EDITOR.)

Julia A. Cox passed away March 14, 1905, at the age of eighty-seven years, four months and eighteen days. She was born Oct. 24, 1817, in Lawrence County, Ohio. Came with her parents John and Mary Morrison, to this state in 1831, and settled near Naples. Oct. 26, 1834, she was married to Wm. G. Cox, whose farm was near Riggston, now know as the McCullough farm. She came to this home a bride of seventeen, lived there until her husband's death, when she came to her present home, having lived in this county since 1831.

Her husband died while in the service of his country, being a member of Co.F., 129th Ill., Infantry Volunteer. He died at Mitchellsville, Tenn., of typhoid fever. The doctors had ordered his discharge and he had written that he would be at home on Christmas day, but he died Dec. 24th, the doctor said of heart failure. I read of his return she received letter from his chaplain, Reverend Abel Scott, stating he had fallen asleep to awake in the resurrection morning. None but God could comfort her. She was truly a war widow, and bore it bravely to live for and raise the children alone. John Thomas Cox her first born died three days before his father, of measles caused by exposure in the army, he being also a member of Co. F., 129th Ill., regiment Infantry Volunteer. Her second son died in infancy. A daughter, Ella May Cox, died Aug. 15, 1888. The children yet living are Micajah Van Buren Cox, Mrs. Jane E. Braden, Forsythe, Ill.; Mrs. Susie H. Peaker, wife of Thos. Peaker of Springfield, Ill.; Mrs. Mary R. Tewksbury, William Hardin Cox; James Robert Cox, Isabella, Oklahoma; Mattie L. Cox,; Carrie J. Cox and Mrs. Ida Albright, wife of Rev. J.H. Albright of Astoria, Ill.

She joined the M.E. church when twelve years of age, and has always shown a Christ-like spirit. She loved her bible. It has been said of her: "I always feel I ought to be a better Christian, when in her presence." Others have said: "I always feel strengthened and uplifted when with her."

She waited patiently the summons of her master, and when he called, she was ready to go, and is greatly missed by her children and grandchildren, who loved her devotedly. There are two brothers and two sisters still living. Henry B. Morrison, St. Louis, aged 85 years; Elizabeth Sears, Bluffs, Ill., who was present at her sister's funeral. Hannah Detrick and Wm. Richard Morrison, both of Hutchinson, Kansas. The names of her brothers and sisters are as follows: Jane Morrison, who married James Templeton, of Ohio, and died aged 20; Elizabeth, who died in infancy; James died at age of 78; Robert died aged 78; John, aged 82; Andrew aged 45; Mary Bobbitt, died aged 78______ine Hollowbush and Sarah Critser, each died at the age of 22.

Funeral services were held from her late home on Thursday, March 16, at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. C.S. Lyles, officiating. She was tenderly laid to rest in Gillham cemetery, by her neighbors' children, whom she always loved - Will Gillham, Edward and Jesse Gillham, Will McCullough, Fred Burns, Robert Allen, and Bennie Gibbs.
