DE CELIS, HUGO RUBIN

Jacksonville - Hugo Rubin de Celis, 84, of Jacksonville, died Saturday afternoon, March 20, 2004, at Passavant Area Hospital.

He was born Nov. 19, 1919, in Viacha, Bolivia, near the city of La Paz, the son of Alexis and Zoila-Rosa Rubin de Celis. He married Isabel Merubia on May 4, 1949, in La Paz, Bolivia, and she survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Pablo (wife, Betty) and David (wife, Alison) both of Jacksonville; one daughter, Isabel (husband, Wendell) Sheeley both of Jacksonville; seven grandchildren, Rachel, Adriana, Eva, Maria-Luisa and Carlos Rubin de Celis, and Sam and Barrett Sheeley, all of Jacksonville; one brother, Alfonso (wife, Inez) of Sao Paulo, Brazil; and one sister, Marta Rubin de Celis of La Paz, Bolivia. He was preceded in death by two infant sons; one brother, Carlos; and one sister, Laura.

Mr. Rubin de Celis was educated in La Paz, Bolivia, and graduated from the American Institute and the University of San Andres. He was the controller for the Bolivian Social Security Administration during the 1940's, and later was director of the American Institute, a private college preparatory school affiliated with the Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the Bolivian Army, stationed in La Paz. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1955, and supported his family working as a janitor at the Orrington Hotel in Evanston for three years before landing a position as an accountant with International Harvester in Chicago. He later worked as an accountant for St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. He was proud to have become a naturalized American citizen during the Bicentennial Year of 1976. He retired in 1985 and later moved to Jacksonville. Mr. Rubin de Celis was involved in the Methodist church most of his adult life, both in Bolivia and the United States. Before his retirement, he served as a lay preacher at the Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago and was an active member of the Gideons. He also taught Sunday school at Bluffs United Methodist Church. In later years, he divided his time between homes in Jacksonville and Bolivia, and was a member of both Grace United Methodist Church in Jacksonville and the Methodist Church of Our Savior in Cochabamba, Bolivia. He was a grandson of a famous Bolivian Statesman and a descendant of Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes, Saavedra. Although proud of his ancestry, he was best known for his humility and kindness to all he encountered. He was a true gentleman with a great sense of humor. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church, with burial at Exeter Cemetery. Friends may call after noon today at Cody & Son Memorial Home, where the family will meet friends from 6-7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Methodist Church of Our Savior in Cochabamba, Bolivia.


HEISS, RALPH BRANDENBURG

Ralph Brandenburg Heiss, 77, of 1106 W. College, died Wednesday afternoon, April 27, 1994, at Passavant Area Hospital.

He was born Oct. 2, 1916, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the son of Monroe and Alice Brandenburg Heiss. He married Marjorie Lokke Dec. 25, 1941, in Sioux Falls. She survives.

He is also survived by two daughters, Alanna Lokke Heiss, wife of Fred Sherman, of New York City, N.Y., and Andrea Brandenburg Heiss, wife of Tam Ormiston, of Seoul, Korea; two sons, Lyndon Monroe Heiss of New York City and Dr. Ralph Lokke Heiss, of Santa Monica, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Mr. Heiss was a member of the Congregational Church, where he was active on the diaconate and the church choir. He was a longtime member of the Jacksonville Rotary Club. He was one of the founders and a longtime board member of the Elm City Rehabilitation Center. He served several years as a member of the Illinois Crime Commission. He was retired from District 117, where he was the district social worker. He served with the U.S. Army in World War II. He received a bachelor's degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls and a master's degree in social work from Washington University in St. Louis.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Congregational Church, with burial at Exeter Cemetery in Exeter. Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. today at Cody and Son Memorial Home, with family meeting friends 5-7 p.m. For many years, Mr. Heiss was the administrator of Rotary Youth Fund, and the family suggests memorials in his name to the Rotary Youth Fund or the Congregational Church.


BERRY, BILLY DEAN

Billy Dean Berry, 78; of Exeter, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at his residence.

He was born May 8, 1924, in Bluffs, the son of James Roy and Marie Thorne Berry. He married Margaret Page and they later divorced.

He is survived by one daughter, Bonnie Sue Berry; one brother Bobby (wife, Irma Dean) of Bluffs; and two sisters, Patricia Patterson and Margaret Ann Baulos, both of Jacksonville.

Mr. Berry was retired from Nesco and Mobil Chemical in Jacksonville. He farmed with his family and was assistant post master in Exeter until the post office was closed. He raised mink, liked to sing, dance, hunt and fix up old cars.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 25 at the Macky Daws Funeral Home in Bluffs, with burial at Exeter Cemetery. Visitation was from 10 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.


KNISLEY, MARTHA GAEL RICHEY

Martha Gael Knisley, 45, of Exeter died Wednesday morning, May 13, 1998, at her residence.

She was born Jan. 14, 1953, in Beardstown, the daughter of Alfred O. and Phyllis Thurman Richey. She married George H. Knisley on May 31, 1975, at Literberry, and he survives.

She is also survived by her parents of Jacksonville; one brother, John (wife, Robin) Richey of Eureka; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Andrew Scott; and one sister, Susan Richey.

Mrs. Knisley was a graduate of the Jacksonville High School Class of 1971 and Illinois College in 1976. She was a teacher for many years, having taught at The Educational Day Care Center, Presbyterian Day Care Center and most recently at the Nursery School, all in Jacksonville. She was a member of the Western Illinois Herb Society, and the Collectors of Illinois Pottery and Stoneware Association. She loved flowers and worked part time at Sorrill's Florist. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Bluffs.

Funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with burial at Exeter Cemetery. Williamson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangments.

Memorials are suggested to the Cancer Support Group at Passavant Hospital, or the Exeter Park.


RICHEY, ALFRED O.

Jacksonville - Alfred O. Richey, 96, of Jacksonville died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

He was born Feb. 13, 1906, in Schuyler County, the son of Orville and Iva Fisk Richey. He married Phyllis Thurman in 1948 in Colchester. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Susan Richey and Martha Knisley.

Mr. Richey graduated from Augusta High School in Hancock County and attended Western Illinois State Teacher's College in Macomb. He was a teacher in rural Schuyler and McDonough schools for several years and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a farmer in Schuyler County for many years, retiring in 1968. He was a charter member of the Jacksonville Chess Club and a member of the Christian Church. He attended the Salvation Army Church.

Survivors: wife Phyllis; a son, John (wife, Robin) Richey of Eureka; and two grandchildren.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Burial: Exeter Cemetery.

Funeral services for Alfred O. Richey were held 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 8, 2002, at the Williamson Funeral Home with Major James Mungai officiating. Major Penny Mungai gave scripture readings. Sarah Beckford and Jermel Beckford sang "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." Pallbearers were Ed Green, Darren Rind, Gary Birdsell, Stuart Slaton, Tom Smith and Regis Knisley. Burial was at Exeter Cemetery.


MILLS, DANIEL W.

AGED SCOTT COUNTY MAN DIED WEDNESDAY

Daniel W. Mills Passed Away at Home Near Bluffs After Long Illness.

Bluffs, Jan, 10 - Daniel W. Mills one of Scott county's most prominent and prosperous farmers passed away at his home 3 1/2 miles southeast of town early Wednesday morning after an illness of 8 months, aged 69 years, 5 months and 23 days. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Mills and the last of a family of eight children. His entire life was spent at the Mills homestead where he followed the occupation of farming. Nov. 24th, 1874 he was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Mills of Exeter who preceded him to the life beyond Aug. 3, 1917. One son has also preceded him in death. Two sons, Clifford of Winchester and Croney, who resides at home, survive. As a citizen and farmer Mr. Mills had high ideals and the Mills stamp was always a guarantee of quality. In his younger years he always took great interest in the little district school, "Apple Pie Ridge." of which he was one of the influential directors for many years. He always favored any movement that was for the uplift or betterment of the community in which he lived. He belonged to the order of M.W.A.

Funeral services will be held at the family residence at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon. The Rev. Caseley of Winchester, assisted by Elder Scott Peake of Exeter will have charge of the service. Interment will be made at the Exeter Cemetery.


LEBRUN, MARY FRANCES MORRIS

Deerfield - Mary Frances Morris LeBrun, 76, formerly of Deerfield, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Harmony of Kenosha in Kenosha, Wis.

She was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Jacksonville, the daughter of James and Frances Morris. She married Henry J. LeBrun in 1945 in Chicago, he died in 1999.

Mrs. LeBrun was a homemaker and member of the Catholic faith.

Survivors: a son, Chuck (wife, Mary) LeBrun of Egg Harbor, Wis.; a daughter, Cindy (husband, Paul) Kruger of Kenosha, Wis.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Exeter Cemetery.

Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville is in charge of arrangements.
