ANGELO, ROBERT ELIJAH

Unknown newspaper - March, 1939

Robert Elijah, son of William and Annie Birdsell Angelo, was born May 18, 1893, in Greene county, Illinois, and passed away after a lingering illness, at his home four miles northwest of Winchester, on Monday, March 13, 1939, at 10:15 a.m., having reached the age of 45 years, nine months and 23 days.

He was united in marriage with Miss Mary Patterson on Nov. 16, 1917, and to them were born three children, George, Eileen and Charles, all at home.

Mr. Angelo was a World War veteran, having served his country 14 months, eleven months of which were spent over seas. After his return he lived with his family in the Winchester community, following the occupation of farmer as long as he was able. He had been in failing health for several years and in August, 1938, entered the Veterans Hospital at Dwight, where he received treatment until February, when he returned home, being able to be up until a few days before his death, when he became seriously ill. All that was humanly possible was done to relieve his suffering by family, doctors and friends, but God had called him and "His will be done."

Mr. Angleo was a loving and devoted husband and father, kind friend, good neighbor and citizen, and leaves a large circle of friends who regret to learn of his passing.

Besides the sorrowful widow and children, he leaves to mourn his departure, an aged mother of Valley City, and the following brothers and sisters: Edward, Valley City; Albert, Winchester; Charles, Jacksonville; Earl, Bluffs; Mrs. Ellen McEvers, Winchester; Mrs. Stella Jackson, Jacksonville; Mrs. Emma Childers, Winchester, and Mrs. Pearl McEvers of Jacksonville. His father and one brother, Ben, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were conducted from the Danner Funeral Home, Wednesday afternoon, March 15, 1939, at two oclock, Rev. F. V. Wright officiating. Rev. Wright also sang, being accompanied by Mrs. Otie Scott. The flowers were cared for by Miss Edna Angelo, Mrs. Lucile Robinson, Miss Cora Lovell and Mrs. Rosa Hicks.

Interment was in the Crisp cemetery, the casket bearers being Elmer Reuter, Hugh Coultas, Robert Christison, Chas. Woodworth and Leo Smith, son, Chas. Woodworth, Watson Taylor and Leo Smith.

PRIEST, MARILDA JANE WILSON

Unknown newspaper - July, 1938

Mrs. John Priest

Marilda Jane Wilson, daughter of Wm. And Amanda Wilson was born April 27, 1861 in Scott county, near Alsey, Ill. Here she grew to young womanhood. She was united in marriage with John Priest, Oct. 24, 1886. To this union five children were born, Earl of Winchester, Mabel, who died in infancy, Mrs. Cecil Merriman of Oxville, Mrs. Ola Campbell of Astoria, Ill., and Mrs. Hazel Schilson of Louisiana, Mo. With the exception of three years she has lived her entire life in Scott county, where by her exemplary life she has made a host of friends. After her marriage to Mr. Priest, they lived on a farm near Oxville until 23 years ago, when they came to Winchester.

She was a devoted companion, a loving mother and excellent neighbor and a beautiful character. Her home and her church were the chief interests of her life. She united at a very early age with the Big Springs Baptist church. Later when moving to their home near Oxville and being no Baptist church near, she spent much time traveling over the community soliciting and collecting funds to build what is known as the Bloomfield Baptist church. Seven years ago she transferred her membership to the Winchester Baptist church, where she became one of its most active and interested members. She found delight in all the services of the church and was ever solicitious about its welfare . She took great pride in her Sunday school class of which Mrs. James Overton is the teacher.

She has gone to join that faithful group who have been called from labors on earth to joy and peace in presence of Him whom she served so faithfully. Her cheerful presence and her devotion will ever linger with us like a sweet benediction and may it be an incentive to urge us on.

Mr. Priest died on March 19, 1930. She leaves beside the children, four stepchildren, Edgar Priest of Decatur, Ill., Nora Priest, of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Belle Becker of Springfield, Harvey Priest of Peoria, Ill., 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She passed away at her home in Winchester, Thursday, July 28, 1938.

Our home is no more, our mothers not there;
The angels have taken her out of our care.
Dark is her room empty her chair.
She has gone to her home, peaceful and fair.
Do not ask us if we miss her,
Oh theres such a vacant place.
Oft we think we hear her footsteps
Or we see her smiling face.
We miss you here
We miss you there
Oh mother, we miss you everywhere

Largely attended funeral services were held at the First Baptist church at 2:00 Saturday afternoon with Rev. F. V. Wright officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Claude Thomas and Rev.
