WM. F. NEW.-The subject of this sketch was born within four miles of Winchester, on section 7, township 14, range 12, Scott county, Illinois, on the 15th day of December, 1821; he being the oldest man now living born in the county. His father, James NEW, emigrated to Illinois in 1819, from Kentucky; he was born in Virginia on the 27th day of October, 1764, was married in Kentucky to Miss Nancy McDONALD, a native of Kentucky. She was born March 19, 1783. They settled where Mr. NEW now resides, and were among the prominent settlers of the county--he died April 12, 1848, and Mrs. NEW died October 17th, 1860. The subject of our sketch was raised upon a farm and is to-day one of the most prominent farmers of the county. He was married to Miss Harriett L. GATES, daughter of Nehemiah and Rebecca GATES, who was born on the 25th day of May, 1820, in Madison county, Ohio. They were married April 8, 1841, by Mr. Lorenzo EDWARDS, a Methodist preacher. They have had born to them seven children, six of whom are living, two sons and four daughters. He began in life with a very limited capital-he now is the owner of a fine tract of land consisting of several hundred acres.
No man stands higher in the scale of honor, integrity, &c., than does he-he is wide-awake to the interest of the county, and is identified with every good enterprise. Mr. NEW has been engaged in farming and stock raising, and has been very successful.
