JOSEPH MERRILL, the fifth son of William MERRILL, was born at Wheelock, in the County of Chester, England, on the 16th of December, 1831. After having served several years in the drug business in that country, he became anxious to see the world across the Atlantic, and accordingly, in September, 1856, shipped as doctor on board the "Montgomery," a vessel bound for New Orleans, and after a rough passage of three months and a half, landed, and arrived in Scott county, Ill, in January, 1857. He spent two years in farming, and returned to England in 1859, where he remained nearly three years, when he again took leave of his native land, and came to Winchester. In 1863 he entered as clerk in the dry goods store of Hainsfurther Bros., where he remained until 1867, when he commenced in the drug and hardware business, which occupation he now follows. In June, 1868, he was married in New York City, to Miss Mary Jane MANLEY, of Manchester, England, by whom he has two little daughters, named, respectively, Mary Belle and Josephine.
