ELISHA ARMITAGE, JR. , the subject of this sketch, was born on the 11th of August, 1818, in a small village called Cawthorne, near Barrisley, West Riding, Yorkshire, England. He was the first son of ELIHU and JUDITH ARMITAGE, natives of Yorkshire, England. He emigrated, in company with his father's family, to the United States, landing at New Orleans in June, 1840. On leaving, they sailed from Liverpool, and were two weeks making the voyage. They came up the river, stopping at Alton, Illinois, and from there went to Spring Prairie, Green county, where they settled, and where Mr. A. was taken sick with severe bilious fever, with which he came near dying. After he had recovered sufficiently t o travel, he went to Morgan county, where he engaged with ADAM ALLISON to take the dress out of a pair of old millstones and put a new set in, that being the first labor performed by Mr. ARMITAGE in the Untied States, his adopted home. From there he went, in the month of December, 1840, to the village of Exeter, where he took charge of a mill for ISAAC D. ISREAL, at twenty-five dollars per month, which he continued to do until the following October, when Mr. CYRUS MATHEWA purchase the mill property, which he run for the latter some nine years. His health failing him, he concluded to abandon the milling business, and accordingly went to Edwardsville, Madison county, Ill., where he engaged with G. W. PHILLIPS in a mill, which he run ten months. From there he went to Fountain Green, Hancock county, Ill., and engaged in the mercantile business with his brother-in-law, JAMES NEELY. He remained there two years, when he sold out and returned to Exeter, where he now resides, and in January, 1852, purchased the Exeter Mills property, in company with his father and brothers, of CYRUS MATHEWA. The name and style of the firm was "E. Armitage & Co.," which they conducted several years, when his father deeded his interest of the property to his sons, with the understanding that in case of a failure to pay they should lose the amount paid. By strict attention to business, they finally succeeded in paying for the property. Mr. ARMITAGE, on the 1st of September, 1870, became the sole proprietor of the mill property, where he now resides, a view of which may be seen elsewhere in this work. Mr. ARMITAGE was married to Miss ELIZABETH L. JONES, daughter of CALEB and CATHERINE JONES. She was born in Casey county, Ky., and in an early day came to Illinois. They have had nine children, four sons and five daughters, seven of whom are now living; two sons died in infancy.

Mr. ARMITAGE's mill property is one of the most desirable in the county for business, and enjoys a large custom. He applied for his first naturalization papers in 1850, and in 1855 became a citizen of the United States. He cast his first vote for JOHN C. FREMONT; was a strong supporter of Mr. LINCOLN in both campaigns, and was a firm friend of the Union cause, giving liberally of his means to carry on the war to a successful termination.
