SACKETT CEMETERY

E part of NW 1/4 of NW 1/4 ection 4, Twp 16N R 6W
Gardner Township
Sangamon County, Illinois

Our thanks to Susan J. Monaghan for taking and sharing the photographs above and linked to the cemetery listing below. This note accompanied the photographs she shared: "All photos were taken on April 14th, 2008 before the brush and vines had leaves. The access to Sackett Cemetery is not public. You have to walk between the houses and across very large rural lots of two Tolan families. My daughter is acquainted with one of these families who mentioned the cemetery to my daughter Emily. Mrs. Tolan told Emily that there is a Revolutionary War soldier buried in the cemetery who was a drummer boy for George Washington. I don't know if that is accurate, however, I do know that the soldier is Enos Campbell. Mrs. Tolan also stated that the Illinois National Guard used to be in charge of caring for the cemetery, but they haven't done so in several years.

Due to the lack of care, time, nature and vandalism have taken a severe toll. A large number of stones are no longer standing and are lying flat on the ground. I'm certain that many of them could be lying face down. There is a creek that runs along one edge of the cemetery and the rest of the cemetery is enclosed by a wire fence."
