FRANCIS L. TAYLOR. - - Francis I. Taylor is one of the thrifty, enterprising and successful farmers of Sangamon county, making his home in New Berlin. He owns and operates a farm adjoining the town. He is a native son of the county, his birth having occurred upon his father's farm near Bates, July 26, 1857. He is a son of Francis Taylor and a brother of A. J. and E. H. Taylor. The days of his boyhood and youth were spent in the usual manner of farm lads of the period and afterward he engaged in merchandising, becoming is father's partner in business. This enterprise was continued with success for fifteen years, at the end of which time the store was destroyed by fire. Later Francis I. Taylor purchased a farm adjoining the town and his since devoted his energies to agricultural pursuits. He has one hundred and fifty-four acres in this place and he owns some good business houses in the town of New Berlin and in his affairs is meeting with very gratifying results.

In June, 1884, in New Berlin, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Taylor and Miss Minnie L. Yates, who was born in this place and is a daughter of Henry Yates, a brother of Governor Richard Yates, a brother of Governor Richard Yates, so that Mrs. Taylor is a cousin of the present governor. Mr. and Mrs. Taylor have five children: Nellie Y., Frank M., Harry Yates, Thomas R. and William. The first named is now a student in the Jacksonville college for young ladies and the others are at home.

Politically Mr. Taylor is an earnest Republican, unfaltering in his advocacy of the principles of the party. He served as postmaster of New Berlin under President Grover Cleveland and again together for twelve years. He has never been an office seeker and has held no positions of political preferment outside of that of postmaster. As a citizen, however, he has been helpful in promoting many measures for the general good and is recognized as one of the valuable men of his town. He belongs to the Presbyterian church, his wife to the Baptist church and they are both earnest Christian people, held in the highest esteem by all who know them.
