J. C. MCMILLAN, M.D. - Although one of the younger members of the medical profession in Sangamon county, Dr. J. C. McMillan has already met with excellent success in his chosen calling and has built up a good practice in New Berlin and the surrounding country, where he is now located. He was born in Island Grove township, this county, on the 30th of August, 1873, and is a son of John A. McMillan, also a native of the county, born here in 1844. His paternal grandfather, William McMillan, was a native of Kentucky and one of the early settlers of Sangamon county, his home being on a farm in Island Grove township for some years. Later he removed to Morgan county, Illinois, where his family were reared. There John A. McMillan grew to manhood and married Miss Cynthia A. Taylor, who was born and reared in Ohio and died in Island Grove township, this county, in 1892. The Doctor's father was engaged in farming in that township for many years, but is now practically living a retired life, making his home with his daughter, Mrs. K. C. Wilcox, in Island Grove township. In the family were five children who are still living, namely: W. H., who is now engaged in gold and silver mining in Oregon; J. C., of this review; Mrs. K. C. Wilcox, previously referred to; Mary, wife of Thomas Wilcox, of New Berlin; and Lee S., who is with our subject in New Berlin.

Dr. McMillan spent his boyhood and youth in this county, and his early education acquired in the common schools, was supplemented by one year's attendance at the schools of Jacksonville. Later he engaged in teaching school for one year, and then began the study of medicine, taking his first course of lectures at a medical college in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1895-6, and graduating from that institution in 1898 with the degree of M. D. He began the practice of his profession in Berlin, this county, where he spent two years. After the death of Dr. Price he purchased his stock of drugs and took charge of his practice at New Berlin, where, in connection with the conduct of the business, he has engaged in practice of medicine up to the present time, his patronage extending into the surrounding country over a radius of seven miles. He is a progressive member of the profession, who keeps abreast of the latest discoveries and theories by perusal of medical journals, and is a member of the State Medical Association and the Sangamon County Medical Society, attending most of their meetings.

On the 11th of October, 1900, in this county, Dr. McMillan married Miss Maude E. Carpenter, also a native of this county and a daughter of Charles Carpenter, one of its early settlers from Ohio. She is a granddaughter of Dr. James H. Gibson, one of the very early pioneer practitioners of this county, having settled here in 1847. Dr. and Mrs. McMillan have a little son, John C., Jr. They are members of the Baptist church, and the Doctor is also connected with the Odd Fellows Lodge at New Berlin, of which he is past grand, and has represented the lodge in the grand lodge of the state. In his political views he is a Democrat and is now serving on the town board and also as a member of the school board. He is public spirited and progressive and gives earnest support to all enterprises which he believes calculated to promote the public welfare or advance the general prosperity.
