SHAWEN, CHARLES OLIVER

Mary Looker's Brother Dies in California

Mrs. Mary E. Looker of this city has received word of the death of her brother, Charles O. Shawen of Orick, Calif., a former resident of Jacksonville.

Shawen was born in Jacksonville April 19, 1902, son of William L. and Josie L. Storey Shawen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Loni Keirl Shawen; a son, Billy; two brothers, Carl and Ernest Shawen; two sisters, Myrle Campbell and Josie C Shawen.

He is survived by a daughter, Charlotte Witham of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a stepson, Russell Keirl; and a stepdaughter, Wahneitta Haley, both of this city; several grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Looker and Leta Crouse of Vancouver, Wash.; and a brother, Wiley C. Shawen of Jonesboro, Ark.

Shawen's body is at the Paul's Chapel in Arcata, Calif. The body will be cremated and burial will be made in San Bruno, Calif., at the Golden Gate National Cemetery.

Notes: Charles Oliver "Sam" Shawen was born in Butler, Ill. He married Lona Estella (Morrow) Keirl on July 12, 1924 in Virginia, Ill., and they were the parents of two children, Charlotte Maxine and William Lee "Billy" Shawen. According to his ssiter, Leta Crouse, he was not buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery at San Bruno, Calif. His ashes were scattered in Humbolt Bay, Arcata, Calif. per his desire.

Mrs. Josie Shawen is Found Dead With Knife, Bullet Wounds in Body

Mrs. Shawen was born Oct. 27, 1882, the daughter of Ollie and Mary Storey. She was married to Lee Shawen, March 13, 1900, and has lived almost all of her life in Jacksonville.

They were parents of six children, all of whom are living. They are Mrs. Myrle Campbell, wife of Byron Campbell, Mrs. Marie Looker, and Mrs. Leta Crouse, the latter two of the Pisgah neighborhood, Ernest and Charles Shawen, both of this city, and Wiley Shawen, whose present address is unknown. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren.

Note: Josie Lulu Shawen was the daghter of Oliver Perry Storey and Mary Susan Bull, Susan being the daughter of Madison Bull and Eliza Jane Fanning. Josie married William Lee Shawen in Vandalia, Mo. Josie was murdered the 6th of July and it is yet an unsolved crime, the murderer never having been apprehended. There was one individual charged, tried and acquitted. Josie was buried in Nortonville, Ill. Walter Warren Haley, May 9, 2002.


SHAWEN, LONA ESTELLA MORROW KEIRL

Local Resident Dies Following Lengthy Illness

Mrs. Lona Morrow Shawen of 216 1/2 South Main street, died late Saturday evening at a local hospital following a five year long illness.

The daughter of George and Eva Morrow, she was born in Morgan county Feb. 4, 1892. She was, for a number of years, an employee of the Purity Cleaners.

Surviving are the following children, Juanita Haley of this city, Helen Bowles of Bay City, Tex., Charlotte Witham of Waco, Tex., William Shawen of Norfolk, Va., and Russell and Harry Keirl, both of this city. She also leaves two brothers, Harry of this city and William of Tucson, Ariz., and one sister, Lucy Ellen McCurley, a nurse serving with the U.S. Army, and eleven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Williamson Funeral Home in charge of Rev. Henry Spencer. Burial will be made in Diamond Grove Cemetery.

Note: Lona Estella was initially married to Harry K. Keirl on April 10, 1910 in Jacksonville and they had four children: Harry sAmuel, Helen Evelyn, Russell Albert, and Juanita Viola Keirl. Her second married to Charles Oliver "Sam" Shawen on July 12, 1924 produced two additional children: Charlotte Maxine and William Lee Shawen. The sister, Lucy Ellen McCurley (4 Feb 1904-15 Jan 1973) was never married. She was adopted by Viola Alice (Morrow) and James Pullman McCurley. Her mother, Evaline S. (Jackson) Morrow died two months after Lucy was born. Walter Warren Haley, 9 May 2002)


SHAWEN, WILLIAM LEE

Wm. L. Shawen Dies Thursday, Services Saturday

William Lee Shawen of 345 Franklin street, a resident of Jacksonville for the past 51 years, died at 1:10 thursday morning at Our Savious's hospital. Mr. Shawen was last employed at the Warga Walgreen drug company.

Surviving are the following children: Charles of Portland, Ore., Ernest of San Francisco, Calif., Wiley, Mrs. Marie Looker and Mrs. Myrtle Campbell, all of Jacksonville, and Mrs. Leta Crouse of Vancouver, Wash. There are 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

The body was taken to the Gillham funeral home where services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday with Rev. John Collins in charge. Burial will be made in Jacksonville East cemetery. The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.


SHAWEN, WILLIAM LEE

Wm. Shawen, 33, Former Resident, Dies in West

William Lee Shawen, 33, former resident of Jacksonville, died Tuesday at Fields Landing, Calif., where he made his home with his father. Mr. Shawen resided at 216 1/2 South Main street while in Jacksonville. He had been an invalid for the past ten years following an auto accident in California.

He was born on Oct. 2, 1931 in Jacksonville, son of Charles and Lona Keirl Shawen.

Surviving are his father, a sister, Mrs. Charlotte Witham of Hampton, Va.; two half-sisters: Mrs. Juanita Haley an Mrs. Helen Bowles, both of Texas; a half-brother: Russell Keirl of Jacksonville, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Shawen was the nephew of Mrs. Byron Campbell and Mrs. Delbert Looker, both of this city.

He was preceded in death by his mother and a half-brother, Harry Keirl. Mr. Shawen was an army veteran.

The remains are at the Pierce Funeral Home in Eureka, Calif. where military rites will be conducted on Thursday. Interment will be in Upper Lake Cemetery in California.
