JAMES H. GARVIN

James H. Garvin, son of Thomas and Mary Garvin, was born in St. Louis, MO., February 15, 1857. He was one of a family of seven children, three of whom preceded him in death. When but a mere youth of nine years of age he came to this community to live, with an uncle, and aside from a few brief visits to the home of his birth, he has spent the past three score years of his life in this vicinity, and has always followed the vocation of farming.

While perhaps not mingling to any great extent with the social activities of the community, yes his was a life patterned much like the one whose desire was to "live in the house by the side of the road and be a friend to man." No greater or more worthy desire can man have in life than this, and white monuments erected by the hand of man crumble away and are forgotten, kind words and neighborly deeds live on forever.

On March 2, 1882 he was united in marriage with Sophia Arendell. Three children came to bless this union, one son and two daughters, the son Orous preceding in death on March 21, 1908. The daughters Mrs. Vert Day, and Mrs. Kirby Tankersley both of White Hall, Ill., together with the wife survive him. Also two grandsons, Rollin and Garvin Day.

Mr. Garvin had been a sufferer for many years of heart trouble but was always very patient and cheerful and continued his usual duties upon the farm until the end which came very suddenly on Wednesday evening, November 9, 1927, being 70 years, 8 months and 24 days of age at the time of his passing. Of the family of seven children of which he was a member, three remain- two brothers, John of Jacksonville, Ill., and Thomas of Murrayville, Ill., and one sister, Mrs. James Donnelley of Bloomington, Ill. He also leaves two nieces in Chicago, one niece and one nephew in California, and numerous friends and acquaintances.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church in Manchester at two o'clock Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. R. Johnson of Jacksonville. Music was furnished by Mrs. Theresa Langdon, Mrs. J. C. Andras and C. L. Leitze, with Miss Louise Pearce at the piano.

The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Glen Funk, Mrs. Emory Funk, Mrs. J. C. Akers, Mrs C. L. Leitze, Mrs. Ralph Cowgur and Miss Agnes Garvin.

The bearers were J. C. Robinson, Merle McEvers, Glen Fun, Carl Brown, Roy McPherson and Thos. Dean.

Interment was in Manchester Cemetery.
