Funerals

Mrs. Elizabeth Fisher

Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Fisher, wife of William Fisher, were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 at the Murrayville M.E. Church. Rev. Charles Leitze of Manchester officiating, assisted by Rev. Houldridge of Murrayville. Interment was made in the Murrayville Cemetery where members of the American Legion Auxiliary conducted their ritual for Gold Star Mothers.

Music was furnished by a quartet, consisting of Mrs. Ethel Stringer, Mrs. Maude Rimbey, Harold Cunningham and James Symons, with Mrs. Melvin Benscoter at the piano.

The flowers were in care of Jessie Hayes, Hazel Hayes and Stella Hagan, nieces of Mrs. Fisher. Casket bearers, all nephews of the decedent, were Harvey, Albert, George, Edward, Ray, Charles and John Hayes.

John Henry Fisher dies Friday morning

WINCHESTER - John Henry Fisher, 89, of Jacksonville and formerly of Clinton and Murrayville, died Friday morning, Sept. 9, at Meline Manor in Jacksonville.

He was born near Murrayville, Oct. 2, 1899, the son of William and Elizabeth Lemon Fisher. He married Mary Ellen Bunch Nov. 1, 1920, in Morgan County. She preceded him in death Feb. 24, 1983.

He is survived by a son, William Bernard of Chapin; four grandchildren, Linda Kay Crawford of Chapin, Donald Eugene Fisher of Gunnison, Colo., and John Fisher, both of Chapin; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Francis Leroy; a daughter, Stella Marie Fisher; six brothers, Claude, Frank, Ted, Tracy, Lee and Glenn; and two sisters, Tina Strawmatt and Mae Blimling.

Mr. Fisher was a member of the Chapin Christian Church in Chapin and the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Clinton. He was formerly employed at the Jacksonville Creamery and Hamilton's Restaurant, where he was a cook. He also served as a U. S. Army cook during World War II from 1942 to 1945.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Murrayville Baptist Church. Burial will be in Murrayville Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Sunday at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester, where the family will received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Military rites will be conducted at the Cemetery by the Chapin American Legion post. Memorials are suggested to the Chapin Christian Church.

Johnny Fisher, 25, of Chapin dies

Johnny Neal Fisher, 25, of 522 Superior St., Chapin, died Friday, Sept. 28, 1990, at his home.

He was born Nov. 8, 1964, in Jacksonville, a son of Bernard and Catherine Waters Fisher. He married Christina Potter of April 18, 1987, in Jacksonville.

Surviving are his wife; his parents of Jacksonville; two sisters, Linda Crawford of Murrayville and Glenna Fisher of Chapin; and one brother, Donald Fisher of Gunnison, Colo.

Mr. Fisher was a graduate of Triopia High School and attended Lincoln Land Community College. He was an ASE certified heavy truck technician and worked for the Chapin Cylinder Head Co.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Cody and Son Memorial Home with burial at Jacksonville East Cemetery.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday with family to meet friends 7-8:30 p.m.



Chapin man dies in apparent suicide

CHAPIN - A 26 year old Chapin man was found dead in a bedroom of his home Friday evening, the victim an apparent suicide.

Morgan County Coroner Jeff Lair identified the victim as Johnny Fisher of 522 Superior St. Fisher's body was discovered by his wife about 5:30 p.m., Lair said.

An autopsy will be held Saturday morning and an inquest at a later date, Lair said.

Mrs. Mae Ryan FISHER aged 85, passed away at the Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Petersburg. A resident of Athens, she was a member of the Athens Methodist Church. Surviving are daughter Mrs. Ermar M. ECKLER of Athens, sisters Mrs. Ruby HAMMOND and Mrs. Irene ERTON of Springfield, brothers, Harry of Cantrall and Amon of Springfield, 2 grandchildren and 2 great granchildren.

NOTE: B. 9 February 1881 in Athens - D. 8 Sept 1966 in Petersburg w/o Addison FISHER; d/o Samuel and Harriett Ann MILLER BENNETT. Burial in West Cemetery in Athens.

GIRL KILLED BY ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE OF GUN.

Miss Marie Fisher, 17 (16) years old, daughter of Henry Fisher and Mary Ellen Fisher was accidentally killed Sunday afternoon. She resided with her mother, southeast of Winchester, and was visiting at the home of a neighbor, Edward Baird, when the accident occurred.

Mr. Baird had cleaned out a 12-gauge shot gun and had reloaded it when it was accidentally discharged, the entire charge piercing the right lung of Miss Fisher, who was sitting in a chair but a few feet of the muzzle of the gun. She died within a half hour after the accident.

Dr. John LeBlanc was called, but the girl had passed away before he arrived. The body was removed to the Danner Funeral Home. A coroner's jury termed the death accidental.

Besides the parents, the deceased is survived by a brother Bernard, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Bunch.

Funeral services were held at the Murrayville Baptist Church at 2:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. Preston officiating. Pallbearers were: Raymond Whewell, John Smith, Russell Mason,Cleo Summers, Russell Sellars and Wayne Walker. Flowers were in charge of Misses Anna Fisher, Bernice Fisher, Alice Fisher, Helen Copley, Mildred Mason and Mrs. Cleo Summers.

Burial was made in Murrayville Cemetery.

Scott County Girl Fatally Shot at Home of Neighbor Dec. 4, 1938
Marie Fisher Accidentally Killed Sunday When Gun Is Discharged

Winchester - Miss Marie Fisher, 16, residing seven miles east of this city, is dead as the result of an accident which occurred about 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the home of a neighbor, Ed Baird. Miss Fisher had called at the Baird residence where she was accustomed to visit frequently.

Baird, sitting on a coach, had cleaned a .12 gauge shotgun and was reloading the firearm when in some manner it was discharges. The entire charge pierced the right lung of the girl who was sitting in a chair a few feet from the muzzle of the gun.

Dr. L. E. Blanc of Winchester was called but Miss Fisher died within 30 minutes after the accident.

Remains were removed to the Danner funeral home in Winchester where an inquest was held. A verdict of accidental death was returned.

Miss Fisher is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fisher and one brother, Bernard.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Murrayville Baptist Church, with Rev. Preston officiating. Burial will be in Murrayville Cemetery.

"Nellie" Fisher, of Winchester dies Thursday

WINCHESTER - Mrs. Mary Ellen (Nellie) Fisher, 78, died at Passavant Hospital Thursday, Feb. 24. She was born in Roodhouse, Aug. 6, 1904, a daughter of Bernard W. and Anna Whewell Bunch.

She married John H. Fisher in 1920, and later married Glenn H. Fisher in 1941, and he died in 1972.

Survivors include two sons, William Bernard of Chapin and Glenn Albert of Imperial, Mo., seven grand and four great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Paul (Veda) Crumley of East Peoria.

She was a member of the Grace Baptist Church of Winchester.

Funeral Services

Fisher, Mary Ellen (Nellie), 2 p.m. Sunday, Murrayville Baptist Church, Murrayville Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to time of service. Visitation after 2 p.m. Saturday, Coonrod Funeral Home, Winchester; family will meet friends 7-9 p.m.

Arrangements are pending at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester.

WILLIAM T. FISHER IS KILLED IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENT LAST NIGHT

William T. Fisher, 83, former resident of the Murrayville vicinity, who was struck by an auto last night at 7:30 o'clock on West Michigan avenue, died of his injuries two hours later in Our Saviour's hospital. Harold Birk, driver of the car which hit the aged man, said the latter was walking in the roadway and going in the same direction. Birk applied his brakes immediately but was unable to avoid the collission. He went for assistance with Bernard Devlin and Thomas Hudson helping to get Fisher to the hospital. Dr. Vincent T. J. Lenth said the accident victim had a compound fracture of the right leg and a possible skull fracture.

Coal Mine Operator

Mr. Fisher, before his retirement, had been a coal mine operator and farmer near Murrayville. He had been making his home the past winter with his son, Lee Fisher and his wife, at 1740 South Diamond Street.

Other surviving children are Claude of Rockford; Frank, Iowa; Henry, Chicago; Glenn, Ted and Mrs. Tina Walker, all of near Murrayville. One son, Tracy, was killed in action in the World War. One daughter, Mrs. Chester Blimling, and his wife also preceded him in death.

The body was taken to the Thompson Funeral Home in Murrayville where an inquest will be held this morning.
