Fanning Funeral Held at Manchester
Remains of Mrs. Mary Caroline Fanning Laid to Rest Monday
Manchester, Jan. 2 - Funeral services for the late Mrs. Mary Caroline Fanning were held at 10 o'clock Monday morning, Jan. 2, at the Manchester Baptist Church in charge of Rev. Fred Peck. Music was furnished by a quartet including Mrs. Alice Wallis, Mrs. ? H. Langdon, E.L. Main and ? W. Story.
The flowers were in charge of Mrs. Elsie Heaton, Mrs. Martha Sanders, Mrs. Ira Whitlock, Mrs. Edith Hudson.
The pall bearers were Charles Thady, Edward Walker, T.M. Whitlock, William Long, Henry Hudson and Matt Cotter. Burial was made in the Gunn cemetery southeast of Murrayville.
Obituary.
Mary Caroline Fanning, daughter of James and Elizabeth Spencer was born in Jacksonville, Ill., Sept. 3, 1836.
After about three years she moved with her parents to what is known as Greasy Prairie, where she grew to womanhood receiving her education in the country schools. She professed a hope in Christ at Richwoods while Frank Nichols was holding a meeting in the year 1860.
Deceased was married to Albert Goacher of Rockbridge, Ill. March 20th, 1851. They immediately went to housekeeping on the farm. Four children came to bless their home. Sarah, wife of James Westrope, deceased, J.H. Goacher of Jacksonville, A.J. Goacher passed away in infancy at the age of 7 months. Clara Nettie Barber, Manchester, Ill. She lived continually with her daughter, Nettie. Mr. Goacher passed away Jan. 28, 1881. She had been in failing health for a number of years and a constant care for the past three years. Kind hearts and loving hearts did all they could and she passed quietly at 3:50 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31st, 1921 at the home of the one who had loved her and so faithfully cared for her.
She leaves to mourn her departure, one son, J.H. Goacher of Jacksonville, Ill., and one daughter, Clara Nettie, wife of David Barber of Manchester, Ill, one brother, J.L. Spencer and one sister, Mrs. J. I. Story of Roodhouse, Ill., two brothers, P.W. and J.H. Spencer and one sister, Cecelia, wife of Samuel Goacher preceded her in death. She also leaves three grandchildren, A.T. and Linnie Goacher of Jacksonville and Mrs. Bertha A. Walker, Manchester, Ill., and seven great-grandchildren. Besides a host of other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Fanning remained a faithful member of Richwoods Baptist church until 1884 when she moved her membership to Union Grove Baptist church after 29 years. She moved her membership to the Baptist church of Manchester where she was always faithful loving kind and true to the great task that was set before her until failing health rendered it impossible to attend. Regardless of her suffering she was always kind and loving.

Mary Caroline Spencer Goacher was married to George W. Fanning in Greene County, IL, on 14 December 1884 in Greene County, IL.
Elizabeth Spencer, mother of Mrs. Fanning, was Elizabeth Gilmore, daughter of Henry and Mary (McDaniel) Gilmore. Mrs. Fanning's father, James R. Spencer, was the son of Elisha and Nancy (Hupp) Spencer, and was also a veteran of the Blackhawk War.
