Hobart Frederick Rigg, 76, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at his residence following an extended illness.

He was born Jan. 14, 1922, in Versailles, the son of Fred and Ruby Mawson Rigg. He married Phyllis Ore on March 18, 1951, in Jacksonville, and she survives.

He is also survived by two daughters, Ann E. Spear of Charleston and Sue (husband, Randy) Bringman of Canon City, Colo.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. William (Hazel) Wagner of San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Aileen Blackwell of Bethesda, Md., Mrs. Howard (Irene) Martin McCarty of Jacksonville; and one brother, William G. (wife, Maxine) of Jacksonville.

Mr. Rigg was a graduate of Jacksonville High School and attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He is a retired farmer and soil conservationalist. He had a love of the land and believed in preserving it for future generations. He was a member of the First Christian Church. He served two terms as Morgan County commissioner, 1956 to 1960. He also served on the Jacksonville Airport Authority and the board of directors of the Chapin State Bank. He was a bomber pilot of World War II. At the time of his election as commissioner, he was the youngest to be elected.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the First Christian Church. The family will meet friends at the church following the service. Memorials are suggested to Ebenezer Cemetery. Cody and Son Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.
