1923-2001

JACKSONVILLE
Edith Smith, 78, of Jacksonville, died early Saturday morning, Dec. 8, 2001, at her residence.

She was born July 16, 1923, in Meredosia, the daughter of Frank A. and Marie Haberor Breakville. She married Ernest M. "Ernie" Smith March 12, 1941, in Oakwood, Mo., and he preceded her in death May 19, 1996.

She is survived by two daughters, Karen S. (husband, Olan) Turner of Lincoln and Debra L. (husband, Gary) Glaenzer of Jacksonville; one son, Michael T. (wife, Patty) of Quincy; two granddaughters; four grandsons; one brother, Frank (wife, Carolyn) Breakville of Springfield; one sister, Rosalie Grindle of Ozark, Ala; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Danny B. in infancy; two brothers, David and Edward Breakville; and two sisters, Alberta (surviving husband, Omer of Jacksonville) Boes and Helen Rhoades.

Mrs. Smith was employed at NESCO during World War II. Following the war she was employed at Montgomery Ward and later as a receiving clerk in the catalogue department for Sears until her retirement in 1983. Until illness prevented, she attended Calvary Baptist Church in Jacksonville. She thoroughly enjoyed her grandchildren and always maintained a helpful and generous attitude.

Funeral services will be held 6 p.m. Monday at the Gillham-Buchanan Funeral Home in Jacksonville, with cremation rites to follow. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 4-6 p.m. Private family committal services for the ashes of Ernest and Edith Smith will be held at a later date at the Jacksonville East Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Morgan County Sheriff's Department Shop-With-A-Cop Program.
