John D. F. Goveia died at his home south of Lynnville Sunday morning at 9 o'clock. Death was caused by cancer of the stomach. He has been in poor health for several years but his illness has not been considered serious only the last few months.
John D. F. Goveia was the oldest son of Emanuel and Anna Goveia and was born in this city January 4, 1850. He was united in marriage March 4, 1873, to Miss Josephine Smith of this city. To this union thirteen children were born, two of whom, Mrs. J. Earl Vasconcellos and Edward, preceded him in death. Those surviving are Mrs. William Damon, Washington, Kansas; Mrs. Charles Painter, Chicago; Mrs. Alfred Souza, Jr.; Mrs. E. H. Ranson; Mrs. M. E. Perry of Jacksonville; Charles Goveia, Beardstown; and Ervin, Paul, Theodore and Bessie L. Goveia at home.
There also survive the following brothers and sisters: Samuel Goveia, Chicago; Joseph DeGoveia, Jacksonville; George Goveia, Arcadia; Frank Goveia, Jacksonville; Mrs. Carrie Estaque, Springfield; Mrs. Annie Baptist, Jacksonville. One sister, Mrs. Mollie DeFrates, preceded him in death. Mr. Goveia had resided all his life in Morgan County and has followed the occupation of farming. When young, he united with the Methodist Church and had always been a faithful member of that body. He also was a member of Camp 132 M.W.A. of this city. Mr. Goveia had always lived an upright life and commanded the respect of the community in which he lived.
The remains were brought to this city and taken to the residence of William Sperry, 859 Doolin Avenue. Funeral services will be held from Northminster church this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Interment will be in Jacksonville cemetery.
