JACKSONVILLE - Jimmie Lee Fernandes, 77, of Jacksonville died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 24, 1923, in Jacksonville, the son of Walter and Abbie Drake FernandesII. He married Mary L. Rigney in 1948 in Jacksonville.

Mr. Fernandes worked for the secretary of state and was a former street superintendent for the city of Jacksonville, retiring in 1987. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving in the South Pacific on Guadalcanal and Bougainville during World War II. He received a Purple Heart. He was a former member of the American Legion and a member of AMVETS.

Survivors: wife, Mary; three sons, Edward Fernandes of Springfield and Vincent and Bruce Fernandes, both of Jacksonville; four brothers, Edward E. (wife, Lola), Billie (wife, Peggy) Donald (wife, Gail) and Richard (wife, Barbara) Fernandes, all of Jacksonville; and a sister, Catherine (husband, Robert) Ward of Jacksonville.

Remains will be cremated.

Graveside services: 11 a.m. Monday, Jacksonville East Cemetery.

Cody and Son Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.
