Retired Salesman Dies of Pneumonia -- Resided Here 15 Years

Hardin Cox, 69 years old, retired salesman for the Price Mercantile Company, died at 4:15 o'clock this morning at his home, 910 W. Seventh Street, after a short illness of pneumonia. Mr. Cox has been a resident of Joplin for the last 15 years, coming here from Jacksonville, Ill.

Beside his widow, Mrs. Martha Cox, two sons and two daughters survive him. George W. Cox, who is in the employ of the News Herald, H. Charles Cox, Mrs. Ray Bond of Joplin, and Mrs. H. L. Crane of Minneapolis, Minn.

The funeral services for Hardin Cox who died this morning, will be held at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the First Baptist church, corner Seventh street and Pearl avenue. Rev. O. P. Bishop, pastor of the church, will officiate.

HARDIN COX, 69, DIES

Death Comes to Him After Month's Illness From Pneumonia

Hardin Cox, 69 years old, died at his home, No. 910 West Seventh Street, at 4:15 o'clock yesterday morning after an illness of a few months. He contracted pneumonia in January. Later his condition improved, but he recently suffered a relapse.

Mr. Cox was born in Jacksonville, Ill., October, 17, 1848. He spent his boyhood in that city and at one time was connected with the good roads commission there. He also was sheriff of Morgan County, Illinois, one term. On February 4, 1885, he was married to Miss Martha Saunders of Bronson, Ky. After his marriage he was engaged as a stock buyer for the Union Stock Company, which later consolidated with the Armour Packing Company.

He moved from Jacksonville to Kirksville, Mo., where he made his home until twelve years ago, when he came here. Mr. Cox entered the real estate business here and later was connected with the Price Mercantile Company. A year ago he retired from business.

He formerly was a member of the Masonic lodge and the Knights of Pythias. He joined the Baptist Church in early manhood.

Mr. Cox is survived by a wife, two sons, Hardin Charles Cox, member of male quartet of the Ridpath Lyceum Bureau, and George S. Cox, an employee of the News Herald; two daughters, Mrs. Henry L. Crane of Excelsior, Minn., and Mrs. Ray Bond of this city; two brothers, Charles Cox of Los Angeles, Cal., and Jerry Cox of Jacksonville; a sister, Mrs. Hattie Sample of Jacksonville.

Funeral services will be held in the First Baptist Church, Seventh and Pearl streets at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The Rev. O. P. Bishop will officiate. The body will be sent to Jacksonville for burial.

COX -- Funeral services for Hardin Cox who died Tuesday morning, were held 2 o'clock this afternoon at the First Baptist Church, with the pastor, Rev. H. O. Bishop, officiating. Following the services the body was sent to Jacksonville, Ill. for burial.

Word was received here yesterday morning of the death of Hardin Cox, who passed away Monday night, March 26, at his home in Joplin, Missouri. Mr. Cox was born October 17, 1847, in the northwest part of Morgan County. Mr. Cox followed farming and stock shipping until his election as sheriff of Morgan County in 1894. He later moved to Kirksville, Missouri, and from there to Joplin.

Hardin Cox Dies in Joplin, Mo.
Was a Native of Morgan County and At One Time Sheriff

Word was received yesterday morning of the death of Hardin Cox who passed away Monday night at his home in Joplin,Mo., after an attack of pneumonia.

Mr. Cox was born in the north west part of the county, Oct. 17, 1847, and was the son of Charles and Francina Phillips Cox. His father was one of the leading financiers of the county and a veteran auctioneer which calling has been handed down thru two succeeding generations. Hardin enjoyed the usual advantages of school and in 1877 was married to Mattie Saunderson of Somerset, Kentucky. He is survived by his wife and four children, Mabel, Mrs. Crane of Wisconsin; Jean, Mrs. Roy Bland of Josplin, Mo.; Charles and George of Joplin; two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Long and Mrs. Jane Samples of this county; and two brothers: Jerry of this city, and Charles of California; and two grandchildren. He followed farming and stock shipping until his election as sheriff in 1894 and when his term was out he went to Kirksville, Mo., and after residing there for a few years, removed to Joplin. He spent several weeks the latter part of last year visiting friends and relatives in this vicinity.

He was a faithful member of the Baptist church and a man who possessed many desirable traits of character and had a great many friends.
