Bethel Cemetery

BETHEL CEMETERY

This large rural cemetery is one and one half miles west of Murrayville and is located in the nortwest quarter of Section 13 in Township 13 N Range 11 W. While standing in the cemetery it is very easy to see the village of Murrayville. A good road is adjacent to the south side of Bethel Cemetery. In some county records this burial is erroneously referred to as Bethlehem Cemetery. Prior to about 1972 this cemetery was subjected to many years of neglect during which it became heavily overgrown with brush. It was so inhabited by snakes that some people referred to it as Snake Cemetery. However, about 1972 the Bethel Cemetery Association started sponsoring an annual benefit fish fry to obtain funds for renovation and maintenance of the cemetery. In 1975 (and still in 2002) Bethel Cemetery is an excellent example of how a neglected cemetery can be reclaimed from the results of years of apathy and neglect. Several Civil War veterans' tombstones may be seen in Bethel Cemetery, including one for a Confederate veteran.

A few days since A. Wade, sexton of Bethel cemetery, with John
Osburn as helper, were solicited by the friends of John Nolly, deceased,
who died some five years ago, to take up the body and remove it to
another place in the cemetery. Upon their reaching the box they found
that the outside box was full of water. Upon removing the casket they
found the features and head but very little changed, except that the hair
had grown long enough to reach his shoulders, and the beard, which was
clean shaven at the time of death, had grown near a foot in length. Some
say it is a very remarkable case.)
