Helen Swain Stewart, 87, of R.R. 1, Ashland, died Sunday, July 20, at Passavant Hospital.

She was born Dec. 28, 1898 in the Berea community in Morgan County, a daughter of Charles W. and Mary Standerford Swain.

She was married to Harold L. Stewart on Feb. 18, 1926 at her parents' home. He died March 31, 1984.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Marjorie) Hartman of Ames, Iowa and Mrs. Steve (Marian) Webb, of Creve Coeur, Mo.; a sister, Mrs. J. C. (Nellie) Kimmel of Robinson; seven grandchildren, Philip Hartman of Ft. Worth, Texas, Helen Ann Kitzman of Cambridge, Wis., Mark Hartman of Omaha, Neb., Sheryl Kunst of Manchester, Mo., Kimberly Hayes of Kansas City, Mo., Andrew Webb of Collinsville and Kristin Webb of Creve Coeur, Mo.; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, a brother and two sisters.

Mrs. Stewart was a former rural Morgan County schoolteacher. She later graduated from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, where she practiced several years before her marriage.

She was an active member of the Berea Christian Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, pianist and the Sunday school treasurer for nearly 50 years.

Mrs. Stewart was a charter member and past officer of the Berea Unit of the Morgan County Home Extension. She was a 4-H leader in Berea for 60 years, belonged to the Morgan County Garden Club, Passavant Hospital Auxiliary, was a former board member of the Morgan County Heart Association and the Visiting Nurses Association of Morgan and Scott counties, a former board member and secretary for the Morgan County Health Department, and a former volunteer for the Red Cross and various other health agencies.

Services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Berea Christian Church with burial in Berea cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Monday at the Gillham-Buchanan Funeral Home, where the family will meet friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to Berea Christian Church or Passavant Hospital.
