Ora L. Davis Dies In Hospital After Long Illness, at 70

Ora L. Davis, a resident of this community for more than forty years, died at St. John's Hospital in Springfield at 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4, at the age of seventy. Mr. Davis had been in declining health for several years, but had been in the hospital only 6 days preceding his death.

He was born at Exline, Iowa on Feb. 7, 1890, a son of W. F. and Ella Stansberry Davis. The family moved to Milan, MO where he grew up. He attended Gem City Business College in Qunicy. He married Miss Veta L. Mathew of Petersburg on October 20, 1915, and they lived for a number of years on a farm north of Petersburg. In 1927 he left the farm and came to Petersburg where he engaged in farm implement business for several years. Later, he became manager of the Tallua Farmers Elevator; and when the late T.J. Raikes was elected

Sheriff shortly before his death, Mr. Davis became his chief deputy, and upon Mr. Raikes' death, served out the remainder of that year as Sheriff.

He was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church and was active in civil affairs, serving on the Board of Education for seven years and on the City Council for teo years.

Surviving are his wife, Veta; one son, Dr. William W. Davis, of Quincy; three grandchildren, Susan, Lee and Mark Davis; and one sister, Miss Gertrude Davis of Evanston.

The body was taken to the Thompson Harms & Hurley Funeral Home, and services were held at the Central Presbyterian Church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Hayward McCollough of the Central Presbyterian Church and Rev. Joe A. Driskill of the First Christian Church. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
