ARMSTRONG, MRS. FRANCES

Died at the residence of her son James Armstrong at Walnut Ridge, Tuesday, the 6th of Sept., Mrs. Frances Armstrong, aged 72 years 1 month and 1 day.

Mrs. Armstrong, or Aunt Frankie, as she was familiarly known by her friends, was a daughter of Wm. and Elizabeth Greene, and was born in Overton county, Tenn. in the year 1809 and removed with her parents to Menard county in we think the year 1821 and settled within a quarter of a mile of where she died.

In 1824 she was married to Hugh Armstrong, who died May 7th 1839, since which time she remained a widow. She was the mother of five children, three sons and two daughters, who arrived at the age of maturity. Three children, Jas. Armstrong, of Walnut Ridge, Mrs. Bev. Watkins of Cass county, and Mrs. Wm. Watkins of West Menard, survive her. She has 24 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. When quite young she united with the Old Baptist church and remained a consistent member until her death.

The funeral services were conducted at the residence of her son, Wednesday, by Elder H. O. Breeden of Tallula, after which he remains were laid to rest in Rose Hill cemetery. Mrs. Armstrong during her long life, about 66 years in the neighborhood were she died, had a large circle of acquaintances especially among the old settlers and enjoyed in a high degree the respect and esteem of all who knew her. As a business woman she was very successful. Left a widow in 1839 with a family of small children to provide for, and owning only 40 acres of land, she, by good management reared her family respectably, giving them the benefits of a liberal education and amassed a large amount of property. She was a sister of Mrs. Eliza Potter, of Walnut Ridge, J. G. Greene and Hon W. G. Greene of Tallula of this county and L. M. Greene, of _________.
