DEGGE, MARY CATHERINE DENTON

Mary C Denton Degge
(April 20, 1862-Oct 15, 1940)

Mrs. Mary Catherine Degge, widow of Aaron Robert Degge, died at her home in this city at 12:30 Tuesday morning, daughter of George Washington Denton and Jane Power Denton and was born on a farm near Curtis. Her parents were of pioneer Menard County stock and were among the earliest settlers of that part of the county. She was married in 1883 to Aaron Robert Degge and following their marriage they lived for a number of years in the West, then returned to Petersburg where she spent the greater part of her life.

They were the parents of two daughters, Opal and Ethyl both of whom preceded their father and mother in death. Ethyl dying in 1904 and Opal in 1909. Mr Degge died on January 25, 1925 at Denver, Colorado where he and Mrs Degge had gone in the hope that his health might be improved. Following Mr Degg'e death, Mrs Degge came back to Petersburg and has since lived in her home on South Sixth Street. She was a member for many years of the First Christian Church of this city and both she and her husband were active in the affairs of that Church, he until his death and she so long as her health permitted her to attend.

Surviving are one sister, Mrs W H Sampson of Denver, Colorado, a number of nephews and nieces, besides many distant relatives.

Funeral services were held at the Christian Church at 2 o'clock Thursday afterenoon, Oct 17, conducted by Rev. M A Warren, assisted by Rev W M Groves of Springfield.

Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery, with the following men serving as pallbearers; Roy C nance, Roy Bradley, Judge V O Whipp, Edgar Watkins, H H Denton, and Perry a Batterton.
